OSWEGO - Mayor John Gosek, 58, of 275 West 7th Street, Oswego, was arrested Friday for the federal offense of "using a facility in interstate commerce (a telephone) to knowingly attempt to persuade, induce, entice, and coerce an individual under the age of 18 years to engage in sexual activity for which he could be charged with criminal offenses, that is, rape in the third degree and criminal sexual act in the third degree" in violation of the New York State Penal Code.
Gosek's arrest is the second arrest in less than two months of a city official or former city official on morals charges. Former city parks superintendent Robert P. Farrell was arrested Aug. 4 and charged with communicating indecently with 12- to 14-year-old girls using e-mail.
A criminal complaint charging Gosek with use of an interstate facility with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity with a minor will be filed today with the U.S. District Court.
Gosek will be taken before U.S. Magistrate Judge George H. Lowe in Syracuse for an initial appearance at 4:30 p.m. today.
If convicted, Gosek faces a minimum mandatory sentence of five years' imprisonment, a maximum possible sentence of 30 years' imprisonment, and a fine of up to $250,000.
Gosek's arrest resulted from an investigation undertaken by the New York State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys John Katko and Edward Broton are responsible for the prosecution of the case on behalf of the U.S. Attorney's Office.
