1. I think getting off on the metro is illegal
no matter where you do it.

(sorry, sorry, really sorry. I couldn't help myself)

5. McPherson Square
That's the closest stop to the White House.

Then, just follow the crowd.

12. you should take the hotel's shuttle
to Union Station, or take a cab.

little things like this help a lot. I should be pulling into town about midnight--depends on how long it takes me to finish burning my "ultimate road trip" CD!

8. Smithsonian, in my opinion. Here's a link to metro map, too
http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm

Smithsonian lets you out between the Capitol Building and the Washingon Monument. (Or next to the Agriculture Department, depending on the exit you use.)

I use the Smithsonian exit for the DC Kite Flys, which are held on the Washington Monument grounds. Works pretty well for arriving, but can take a long time to get into the station at the end of the day, due to the crowds. Might print a copy of this map ( http://www.wmata.com/metrobus/maps/dc.pdf ) and walk to a different station, like Federal Triangle.

11. DU people are meeting at the Washington Monument
whch means you should get off at either Federal Triangle or Smithsonian. FedTri is your best bet, since you won't have to fight across the Mall.
