My closest friend has taken fertility drugs for the past two years. So far she hasn't got knocked up, either. :( She's only 22, but she has Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) which is believed to be the most common cause of infertility in the US.

I just can't identify with the whole taking fert. drugs at only 22. I think of infertility as something one has for years before having to take drugs for it. Which is not to say that 22yr olds can't have been trying for years. To me, taking fert. drugs at 22 is a lot like taking it at 18 or 16. Seems incredibly young to be taking those. Maybe someone will educate me?

4 1/2 years now, the last 2 1/2 on meds. She doesn't even have cyles without the meds, with the meds they're still generally annovulatory. Even if the treatments don't allow her to concieve and carry a child, they're still helping to get her hormones closer to normal.

There is no excuse for this, really. Anyone who gets a fertility drug should be monitored by their doc to make sure there aren't too make follicles ripening for fertilization at the same time. If there are too many, you skip the cycle (which also means no sex) and try again next month, perhaps with a slightly lower dose if possible.

Sometimes I think some doctors hand out fertility drugs perscriptions like candy and under then say to themselves, "Let's see what happens."

As sad as it is I think there is a reason why some people can't have kids. Humans multiply like rabbits as it is, there has to be some sort of natural population control since we are at the top of the food chain.

16. Alot of OB/GYN's hand out Clomid like it was candy and

don't monitor. They'll do that for 4-6mo before they refer you to an Reproductive Endocrinologist if they can get you to agree to it. That's usually the first drug they start you out on because multiples are less likely and it's inexpensive. Been there, done that. Stopped when my doc wouldn't monitor me with with ultrasound. I hightailed it to an RE after that.

You've got to be kidding me! There's every chance in the world for a natural conception at that age, almost no matter what the circumstances.

17. Not with PCOS or plenty of other issues.

With PCOS, the outside of the ovaries harden, develop the cysts, but never (or rarely) release an egg. Sometimes the cysts can stay longer than one cycle. Wonder if she took the meds the way she was supposed to. Drs. are not supposed to give the trigger shot of HCG if there are too many follicles close to errupting. Sometimes, the HCG shot is not needed though and multiple eggs pop out on their own.

I saw the inside of my body weekly, if not daily, every month for 4 yrs. I know what I'm talking about.

My brother's wife took fert drugs and had triplets 18 years ago. She loves her kids of course but deeply regrets doing it. They are all in college right now, my bro is killing himself working to pay the tab.
Mom and I are helping out some but the expense is enormous.

Poor thing, I actually feel a bit sorry for her...22 is so young to have such a big responsibility.

I wonder why she had to resort to fertility drugs at such a young age? What's up with that? Why would the doctors not want to wait it out a bit longer before taking that step?
