The old shell game
This month we’ve found out that big business has been playing their own version of “Three Card Monty” with the press by not reporting the number of jobs being cut and sent overseas. However, their hands weren’t quick enough to keep our eyes from seeing the hidden kernel of truth. For example, if you want to check out the movies, and use your credit card while you’re there, chances are you’re supporting companies that offshore IT workers. We also found that jobs are heading south, waaay down south.
Since CAFTA was passed, the new hot spots for offshoring are closer to home. Referred to as “Nearsourcing,” it still means that jobs leave the U.S. Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, Nicaragua and Panama are gaining jobs from corporations like Dell, Proctor & Gamble, Citibank, IBM and Intel.
Currently, 24,500 Costa Ricans work in call-center and IT jobs. They expect to double the number of jobs in the next two years. Dell already employs 2,000 at its Panama center. Intel has been manufacturing microchips in Costa Rica since 1998 and has now launched a software division there. It has also been reported that Citibank and IBM are already sending work to Brazil. ¡Aye caramba! (I wish that I knew how to say that in Portuguese)
Intel was also in the news saying that it had established a new Shanghai-based research unit called “Intel Asia Pacific Research and Development Ltd.” Intel plans to employ more than 1,000 at the facility. Couldn’t they find enough smart people in Costa Rica?
On the entertainment front, Ness Technologies, Inc., based in Hackensack, New Jersey, has announced inking a contract with Boca Raton, Florida’s own Hollywood Media Corp. (Hollywood.com) to provide IT services at their existing “Managed Strategic Services” facility in Mumbai, India. And remember, when you’re ordering those tickets online with your Capital One card, their parent company, Capital One Financial Corp, continues to cut staff by outsourcing to Accenture Services (currently ranked #8 on our “Top 10 Culprits” list).
Wow! This game only takes 2 ½ walnut shells and a dried pea. So, kick back in the sun, enjoy the day and say: ¡No se preocupe, sea feliz!
Peas found:
4 new companies added to the list
1,799 U.S. tracked layoffs
32,556 recorded jobs sent offshore
