Still trying to wrap my head around this one--not sure how I feel

My daughter went in to our local grocery store where she works to get her check this morning.
People were lined up to the back of the store.
This was supposed to be her day off, but they asked her to come in.
She did. She just got home after working 10 hours.
She said there were tons of Houston evacuees in town.
But this is the one that disturbed me.
She said a man came in from Houston--and told her it cost $600 to fill up his RV.
They drove their RV out of town instead of their car.
$600. That is 200 gallons of gas.
If this man was telling the truth, then he personally prevented many families from getting out of Houston safely.
However...I had to weigh that with the fact that there aren't any hotel rooms available in Texas. It's a hard call--just shows that there aren't any perfect solutions.:(

I've driven over the road trucks with dual tanks before and the biggest I've seen is 100 gallons per side, and thats for a big truck. I can't imagine an RV holding 300 gallons...

there is some stupid music festival here this weekend, which the organizers refused to cancel. All it's doing is taking up needed hotel rooms. Better to feed the egos of these second rate bands and all the pot smokers coming to see them.

Sure, they sucked up gas that others - MAYBE - could have used.

But they will NOT take up space in motels/hotels that others need, and, from their own personal standpoint, they are going to be much freer to move around and do what they need to do.

Speaking personally, if I had an RV, and a storm was coming in that I had to evacuate, I'd say to the family (if I had one), "Shit, gonna be a week or more before we can come back, obviously I don't have to go to work, we might as well make an adventure of it - let's go to Yellowstone!"

I can't fault them for their gas usage at all.

As you say, there aren't any perfect solutions.

that people were setting on the expressway just barely moving. It took hours to just go a few miles. I can see how it would take that much gas at the rate.

The smaller ones take around 50 or less. Also, theres a chance it might be a diesel RV. IMO it was a smart move on his part. He doesnt have to worry about a place to live.

I don't understand that. He had the ability to get his family out to a place of safety with a roof over their head and he took advantage of it. He is responsible for himself and his family. He is not responsible for the high price of gas or lack there of. So long as he didn't steal the rv and the gas and run people off the road, I don't think he did anything wrong. And maybe he plans to volunteer where ever he ends up. One man, can only do so much.

You folks are aware that owners of RVs and other high silhouette vehicles were specifically requested to get their vehicles out of town? You know, to help reduce the amount of debris that would be created in the event the storm struck their area?

200 gallons is not a lot of fuel, plus his RV is most likely considerably more expensive than his car and more likely to get damaged by the winds verses his car. He is just protecting his assets

Plus you need to consider the hotel room he might have freed up for someone else by living in his RV

The people who topped off their 20 gallon tanks with 5 gallons of gas personally prevented many families from getting out of Houston safely than this one guy.
