I have a really dumb question -
I have never been to a protest before, and am going to the local one here in Phx.

And I want to make some signs.

Is Poster Board the best thing to use?
And is it better to hammer it on to a stick?

Okay - that was 2 dumb questions!

1. Poster Board is fine
Its MUCH easier to carry around. A lot lighter and less clumsy.

2. foam board
would be sturdier. also, i think some places have issues with tall signs.

also, if they try to arrest you, go limp. :)

6. Some DUers with experience have posted helpful info
on participating in a protest. Here's what I remember:

Don't bring a backpack. The cops can get nervous about them.

Don't engage with someone who is flicking you crap -- it could escalate into something nasty.

If you notice trouble, try to move away from it.

Bring water and something to wipe your eyes with, just in case tear gas is sprayed into the crowd.

BEHAVE yourself!

Stay safe!

Take care of yourself.

And search the posts over the past few days. There is additional info on how to participate in rallys and marches.

Stay safe, but participate!

5. I don't know if the stick part will be an issue or not.
I think it may be considered a weapon so not allowed. But if you rolled up poster board tight like a tube and put another one inside that one, you will have a telescopic stick of sorts to affix your sign to.
You will need rubberbands and/or tape.

Have a great time and stay safe. :yourock:

7. Some places, like here in NYC or in DC, don't allow you to use
sticks other than cardboard rolls--like what's inside a roll of wraping paper. I save the real strong ones for protests and both staple and tape the posterboards onto them. Have a great protest! I'm getting on the bus to DC in a couple hours!

8. What a silly question....
Just kidding, I would be just as confused. Where and when is the protest in Phoenix? I live in Tucson, and I have not heard of any protests in the works. Sadly, this weekend I am trapped in Las Vegas at a conference. I hate this place, constructed for the sole purpose of separating people from their money.

Anyway, happy protesting, lets convert AZ to a Blue state.

10. Tucson is blue, because of the U of A
Unlike Phoenix which is very red. Wish we could carry the whole state. Go Blue, and I will now go to bed its 1:30 a.m. Peace and happy protesting.

11. There are no dumb questions.
What's important is that you are pulling up your socks and taking to the streets, and that's really terrific.

Just make something that will be comfortable to carry for a while. Also you can write on your T-shirt or carry a banner with friends.

But mostly just show up.

I'll be marching in SF.
