17. FUCK THAT!
As a journlist, I can tell you this... it's HIS choice to be there, and if he would rather be somewhere else, he should put his fucking mic down. Some punk outta J-school will pick it up and do the job. Cause a good reporter doesn't give a shit about personal safety, just the story, the experience, and sharing it.

That's all.

Go Cooper.

Plus, reporters HAVE to be there.. if they aren't then those wh owish to do wrong will run-amok.

They have to be there for when the idiots try to pull things. Not showing how wet they can get in as short a time as possible.

29. They would not be standing outside if it wasn't safe
But they have to be in the area when all the shit happens. In the meantime if the producer says, "Hey, is it safe enough for you to go outside and get a look at the wind?" And it IS safe enough, no reason not to go outside.

I've been asked a few times, "Are you safe? Don't get yourself hurt." And have never given an answer that wasn't honest. Even then news directors and such still are more likely to order you out before you want to go.

33. Not so...
The first time he covered a hurricane, it was only when the traffic signs started flying off that he came inside. What about the ones flying around that he couldn't see coming in the pitch black?

It's a hurricane, we get it. I don't need a reporter to stand in the middle of a tornado to cover the story either. Covering the story of the aftermath or the lead-up is one thing. Standing in the middle of the street getting blown around is just stupid, I'm sorry. You can film what is going on outside without standing in the middle of a storm.

Exactly, when there was a clear danger, he came in. Before that... it is his duty to report.

43. My point was
That was what he could SEE. It was pitch black all around them, anything could have come flying at them. You cannot predict what will happen to you standing in the middle of a hurricane! That is why people evacuate!

There is no "journalistic duty" to stand in the middle of a storm that you can easily film from inside. That is a stunt, as far as I am concerned. "Look how wet I am, look how I'm almost falling down, look how shit is falling around me!" Yes, and we could also see that from a safe distance. This is macho silliness.

Standing outside in the middle of a storm isn't journalism, in my opinion.

Hurricanes are wet and windy and loud. If you stand outside like a fool in the middle of a hurricane, you will get very wet and have difficulty standing up. You will need to shout to be heard. That isn't news. It does make for "exciting video" if you like that sort of thing. I find it silly.

57. That's fine, but for me, standing in the middle of the story...
... is effective journalism.

We wouldn't know what war looked like if we didn't have war photographers.

We wouldn't know what kind of wrath tornadoes yield if it weren't for storm-chasers with cameras.

We all witnessed the aftermath of Katrina, but there exists only a smattering of video recording the height of her fury. It's damned riveting, watching the storm surge come in so rapidly, and the cameramen put themselves in much danger to share what they had seen.

I don't find it silly, but I can see where someone might.

He says the cannot drive anywhere, which is why they are staying where they are. I'm getting very nervous for him, and wish he would go inside. I think he is near a hotel; most of the CNN crew out reporting on the storm are reporting near where they are staying. I appreciate what he and the other reporters are doing, but it looks very dangerous now, so I wish he would go inside. I'm afraid he will get hit with flying debris.

I sure hope he's tide down. CNN's reporting that the "eye" has approached but not where Anderson is located. But can expect the "worse" for about 45 minutes.

He's a pro.

Here is a link: http://www.cnn.com/

the wind can pick up a car and turn him into a grease spot and it rubs him into the concrete on it's way to it's destination.

We used to throw a case of beer in the van in Illinois when there were reports of tornadoes on the radio and go to where they were all afternoon, so I sort of get what he's into, only at least WE were drugged when we did stuff like that :)

Edited on Sat Sep-24-05 03:17 AM by VolcanoJen
... severe-weather wise. I've seen some horrible storms, and had one close brush a few years ago, but watching this hurricane coverage is like watching a tornado that just goes, and goes, and goes, and is wide, and wide, and wide.

It's awesome, the power. It's kind of hypnotic. I can see where hot-shot reporters (they used to call Dan Rather "Hurricane Dan") get their rocks off by being in the middle of really big news.

Running toward danger isn't all that new... it isn't one bit smarter than it's ever been, though, that is for certain.

we were in the basement with quilts over our heads for a couple hours...took an unusually long time for these storms to pss by.
We lost some branches and a few shingles...but others in communities not so far away had their homes flattened.
It is terrifying sitting there with the house shaking, wondering if the windows will implode and the roof will peal off in the next 10 minutes.

Edited on Sat Sep-24-05 04:06 AM by VolcanoJen
To the best of my ability:

"It's like a blizzard of snow, but it's wind and rain."

"I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS. I can't imagine it getting worse or stronger than this. I'd walk out there, but it's too easy to get blown over, I'm not going to do it again."

"It's impossible to walk out there, it sucks the breath right out of you."

"There's half a foot of water on the ground just in this area already. I can't imagine how it must be in other areas. I don't know if you can see it, but look at this wall (points to choppy camera shot at wind and rain on horizon)! I'm sure it doesn't translate, it's like special effects in a movie is the best way to describe it."

Anderson can't hear the question from the CNN news desk. Water in his ear, he says.

CNN reports 92 mph gusts as Anderson reported. Not even the worst of it yet.

Back on at 5:05 am ET

"You can't look into the wind, it's literally a white wall in front of you, a solid mass, this must be the height of the storm for us."

He's standing behind brick structure now.

"Seeing the storm as powerful as it is right now, I feel for the people who might be still no the roadway. I can't imagine being stuck in a car in conditions like this. This will probably be our last broadcast, I don't think we can continue in these conditions. I want to thank all the technicians here for their work, signing off now for the time being."

Was close to a sheltered area, but finally moved inside to wait til it passes.

Miles is a bit north of Anderson. He showed them that he was just 3 steps from being in a sheltered area. Able to step out to demonstrate the force of the wind. Was saying that it was an open parking lot next to him and had been very careful to check out what could had the potential to be blown his way. Will probably move inside in the next 45 minutes after the worst passes through.
