I'd translate it as:

Nation shall not wage war against nation, nor learn of war anymore.

(I disagree with translating as "study war" instead of "learn of war."

It was his famous speech against the war in Vietnam. It's an awesome speech and gives you goosebumps.

"Nation shall not wage war against nation, nor study war anymore."

17. I think he meant active studying

So you should learn from war (which we don't!), however what Dr. Martin Luther King probably meant was that you should not study the art of war, ie. how to kill a person, how conquer a city etc. etc.

So it is the art of war which should not be studied, however we need to learn from wars, because there have been so many and there is no such thing as a war without suffering, misery, death and ugliness and and that lesson is still not learned.

I'm just saying that I disagree with the traditional translation of that verse from the Hebrew.

I think the author of that biblical passage meant that nations won't learn of new wars (because there will be peace), not that nations won't study military-strategy.

Can't find the transcript, but I've found an MP3 and it is one of the best anti-war speeches ever given in history.



I looked around the web and couldn't find audio of what is in my opinion King's best, most powerful, most beautiful, and most pertinent speech, "Why I Oppose the War In Vietnam". So here it is, in MP3 and complete, enjoy. It's a discussion of America's motives for involvement in Vietnam and a little bit about our hushed history, amazing how little has changed, the speech could have been made yesterday. In 1964, the year Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize, Time Magazine called him man of the year, but they called this speech "a demagogic slander that sounded like a script for Radio Hanoi." Sort of like what they said about Susan Sontag's beautiful critique of America in Afghanistan. Made one year to the day before he was assassinated, April 4, 1967.
