Great quote from Dwight D. Eisenhower
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched,
every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense,
a theft from those who hunger and are not fed,
those who are cold and are not clothed.
This world in arms is not spending money alone.
It is spending the sweat of its laborers,
the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children...
This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense.
Under the cloud of threatening war,
it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."
--Dwight D. Eisenhower--

Pardon me if you've heard this before, but I just read it and it seemed very significant today. Of course, Eisenhower knew what war was all about. He didn't need to play toy soldiers with real people.

5. Great quote.
Eisenhower was a man who knew all too much about the Military Industrial Complex.

Seems to me in his later years, he realized and greatly regretted the frankenstein that he and others saw coming, primarily because they had been party to the implementation and production of one such defense system. We can be grateful that Eisenhower and others in the military were discerning enough in their latter years to speak out against an economy ruled by defense spending. It can be used as a compass by which to guide ourselves forward, and away from a system that promotes war, death and destruction.

7. Other Eisenhower quotes
"I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity."

"Here in America we are descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels - men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion."

And it seems like maybe he foresaw the coming of Shrubya on this one:

"Any man who wants to be president is either an egomaniac or crazy."

10. I heard a clip today on the computer
I think it must have been from the pro-war folks in DC - using this sort of logic. I heard it during Viet Nam and every other time true patriots have questioned the military plans of the Rethugs in power.
Dissent = disloyal subversion = treason

11. "Every gun that is made"
"This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense."

"Under the cloud of threatening war (or violence)
it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

Guns or bombs, war or local violence.

Hate is hate. What fuels one, fuels the other; whether it be guns or bombs, war or violent crime.

12. A machine tool creates jobs; a bomb destroys jobs.
A machine tool is money in motion.

A bomb is dead money.
