What does conservative really stand for?
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 06:17 PM by Cleita
Well here is my two cents. Edited to say I am talking about PNAC conservatives.

“C” is for chauvinism, a blind, excessive patriotism, like jingoism, which is an extreme nationalism marked especially by a belligerent foreign policy. It’s also an attitude of superiority by men toward women.

“O” is for obstructionism, a deliberate interference with the progress or business of a legislative body.

“N” is for narrow-mindedness, or a bigoted, homophobic, sexist and intolerant attitude towards others.

“S” is for stereotyping or a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or critical judgment.

“E” is for equivocation, a use of language with the intent to deceive, or old fashioned lying and double talk.

“R” is for racism, a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

“V” is for violence, an intense, turbulent, or furious and often destructive action or force like waging war at the drop of a hat.

“A” is for avarice, an insatiable desire for wealth and gain.

“T” is for thievery, or stealing, robbery, swindling and cheating summed up with the conservative motto, “What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is ultimately mine.”

“I” is for ignorance, or dearth of education, information and understanding of the thing specified, which results in showing a lack of knowledge or intelligence.

“V” is for villainy, or depraved and criminal behavior.

“E” is for ego centrism, or a selfish, egotistic, self-absorbed, narcissistic view of life.

Put them altogether and they spell conservative in a very truthful way. After a day of watching conservative Republicans on television today. I just had to say this.

1. That's very eloquently written, but
I do know some honest, true-blue (or red, as the case may be) Republicans, not the neo-cons in power now. They would disagree with many numbers on your list.

2. They aren't the ones I am referring to. Unfortunately, they
get very little public acknowledgement or air time. You know the ones I am referring to.

13. I bet someone out there would be capable of disagreeing with you, I'm one.
The only red neoconservatives' I'm familiar with are those who live and voted in the RED SATES, for G.W.. You know. The states who received extraordinary subsidies, that voted for G. W.; those western states who graze their live stock on government land. Well, they managed to win the states electoral vote but not the popular vote; in the country.

Al Gore, love him or heat him, he won the popular vote. Had we been a true democracy he would be in the White House.

Too bad the newspapers and news commentators miss speak, when they are talking about democracy!

Remember saying the pledge of elegance, to the flag daily in school?" How did part of it go ... "and to the Republic for which it stands..." That is true isn't it? actually the US is a republic! Yet they are preaching democracy, to countries across the world. Do you believe they buy that line of BS?

It appears to me the conservatives have it back wards. "Caveat Emptier" to paraphrase it - translates to customer beware - your dealing with a scoundrel who will fleece you, of your last dollar. And referrer to you a as sucker under his breath as you leave.

Many of us realize, that the exchange of value for value produces no profit. It's value deception that fills the pockets of merchants and their stockholders.

I don't know how corporations that receive a subsidy from the government can deceive its self into believing in a free market.
If true, market systems are, as they preach it ... function is to keep prices competitive through competition; that sounds good.

However, one need only look at how an entire metropolitan area with multi gas stations, owned by competitive interests, can manage to raise prices, of gas, almost simultaneously; instead of one or more lowering the price of their gas for their consumers. No, they raise the price of gas for themselves and their stockholders, and we're supposed to believe in it competition.

Dream on if you like: but the people are learning a very valuable lesson. And that eduction is directed to everyone, even those who have university degrees, who have been deceived by their professors; many years ago.

I'm very interested in how they are going to con themselves out of this dilemma. Ten to one it will be more subsidies for business; they create jobs or do they. "Lean and mean is their dogma."

4. See....there's the problem
Painting them, broad-brush, as villians. There are actually conservative ideals that many liberals, myself included, find appealing.

One of those is goverment interference in our private lives. A true conservative thinks the government should stay out of our affairs (both literal and figurative).

Another is fiscal responsibility. I don't think there should be the rampant cronyism that our current goverment espouses. That makes me a conservative....on that issue.

The spousal unit and I grow a lot of our own food. Do our own building projects. We recycle and reuse. We conserve. In many ways we are conservative.

In the much larger social picture, we are raging liberals. Social justice, democracy and all that.

Just see them as people, welcome them into the fold when you can. Stop being so binary in your thinking. The world is full of shades of gray. It is almost never black and white.

5. Those values you hold dear are not conservative values.
They are liberal values. Conservatives talk about them because they know what you want to hear. When do we ever have fiscal responsibility? When Democrats are in charge. Democrats aren't into having government in every phase of our lives like we have now. Do you like the fact they can open your mail and not tell you?

6. They are Libertarian values. Politics is not one dimension / two party.
The two party system distorts American politics by trying to force a round peg into a very narrow thin slot.

7. I can't disagree with you there, however,
historically, the Democrats have balanced expenses while still able to implement social programs. Jerry Brown left the State of California with a surplus that was emptied into the pocket of corporations in no time when the Republicans gained control of the treasury. We are the ones who introduced recycling and we are the ones who believe in sustainable consumption. So libertarian values may crisscross with Democratic values but they aren't really workable in a Libertarian framework. And conservatives are anything but their name. It's sort of like the Nazis weren't really socialists although they claimed the name.

11. I agree and would like to add my two cents if you will allow me.
What we have here is more than break down in Homeland Security. It's far more serious than “a breakdown in communications.” We have an over abundance of speech writers and political cronies who don’t have a clue of what had to be done other than pick up their paychecks.

We are experiencing a classic example of small minds preaching small government. What is needed now is a demand that none of that residential property, lost by the victims, ends up the some corporate “carpet-baggers” portfolio! Absolutely no private property is taken by eminent domain; for commerical use. If that happens, it will be one of the most unjust actions the States of Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama; can do to those people who lost so much.

There are many heroes to be sure but the one that impressed me most was the young 18 year old Negro boy who had the good sense to steal (commandeered) a school bus and drove people off that bridge and out of harms way. That is what I call thinking out of the box!

The other is the police officers' who took care of their wives and family during the flood in New Orleans. Some called them deserters. I believe they had their priorities straight.

Many, no doubt, will disagree with me on this. Before you jump, to any preconceived notion about me, who you don’t know, let me tell you. I have wore a uniform from the age 12 until I was 46 years old; over 36 years. I attended a ROTC military high school, joined the National Guard, entered the US Army was honorably discharged, served 6 years of inactive reserve duty, entered a Police Department and spent 25 years. I was shot, in a gun battle, by a person who had just killed a fellow officer, attempting to make his escape. He was captured and later hung himself (saving the City a expensive trial) in his cell.

I spent most of my life serving, everyone but my family. I was underpaid and over worked: spent little time with my family on holidays because we were needed for crowd control. It wasn't until the mid 1950 before we received a 40 week.

Then as it is now police and other public employees were held in contempt by the public and politicians who wanted smaller government and lower taxes. I discovered that altruism is a sickness. Putting an American Flag on your coffin and calling you a hero after your killed in the line of duty is an insult.

Just think what the government and our teachers told us, what to do to protect ourselves, in the 1940s from and Atomic Bomb Attack. For some it was duck under your desk; for others go into the hall way put your head between you legs and hands over your head. That’s what the Government recommended we do in the event of an atomic attack; believe it or not, those of you who are under 40 years old. What a insult to humanity from or own government.

Well now we have the government telling us about “Home Land Security.” Well you’ve gotten a good look at the connective’s thinking in the past three weeks. And what they think of you and your family.

My advice: wake up and smell the roses. These people need to go ASAP.

:kick:

14. Welcome to DU Rodger Dodger.
And thanks for your post. It is people like you who are being misused by this fascist government who has taken over our country. I don't think we can point out enough or often enough what they really stand for.

12. Edmund Burke intended it to be a way of thinking that
stands for traditional values, support for the ruling party and a miserly way of conducting business (prudent). This shit they call conservatism today is a perversion of his beliefs. Burke was appalled by the way the French Revolution went down, yet still sympathized with Americans over ruthless taxation by his own government.

These asshole Rovians aren't worthy of Burke, they disgrace his ideas.

15. I was brought up by Republican parents and I'm sure if
they lived long enough, they would be moderate Democrats today. They lived long enough, however, to regret voting for Nixon.

18. We all make mistakes, the difference is Repukes today cannot
admit to ANY wrong doing. At least Tricky Dick tried to reconcile some of his evil deeds later on in life (IMO). Todays Repuke shows no remorse for anyone. Todays Repuke scoffs at the poor and mocks wounded soldiers everywhere. I doubt even Nixon would recognize his party today, I'm sure Ike would be appalled.

16. H is for Hypocrite
Sorry it doesn't fit in with your excellent compilation, Cleita, but it does ring in the second letter of the word that comes to mind when I think of "Them."

This is a handy quote for polite company:

"A conservative is a man who is too cowardly to fight and too fat to run." -- Elbert Hubbard

But it definitely needs a mention.
