Update on Leonard Peltier
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 08:17 PM by BeHereNow
Dear DU,
I have been talking with Toni Zeidan who works
in the LPDC (Leonard Peltier Defense Committee) office
over the last few days. I have agreed to post updates here
for her on Leonard.
Many of you called the Terrer Haute facility where Leonard
was moved to and placed in solitary confinement.
What an abomination that scene was.
Your calls DID make a difference.
Leonard is now in Lewisberg, PA USP and
has regained his "General Population" privleges.
That includes his right to paint. He is a very gifted artist
and as you might imagine, his art is one of his few escapes
from the insanity of his years of incarceration.

He was not allowed to take ANY of his suppiles in the move,
he lost everything basically. If you would like to
help, you can send support to the LPDC office and specify
"supplies" on your contribution.
I called the Lewisberg office- Leonard can only purchase supplies
through the Prison "Craft Store," but Toni assured me that
their office will direct your support to him as you request.

To contact Toni and learn more, vist the LPCD web site here:

2. I love Leonard
and he has no business being incarcerated, Our penal system is an atrocity. Nov violent criminals should be put in nothing less than home confinement. But with the privitazation of the prison system, they make 30-60 grand a year off each prisoner.

It's heinous.

God bless Leonard. Big time.

Leonard Peltier's Annual Message
January 23, 2004
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Below is Leonard Peltier's annual message delivered in conjunction with the anniversary of his incarceration on February 6th. Please broadcast as widely as possible to as many groups as possible. This is a message to all people regardless of color.

Hau Kola, Hello my friends, my relatives:

You can never imagine the heartfelt comfort it brings to know you're not forgotten in prison. This is my 28th year, and I've seen others come and go and return again. I can't help but feel a great sorrow for many of these young men who keep coming back for one reason or another; most of which are alcohol related offenses. So much has changed since I came here and yet, in many ways, it's still the same.

The government, under the pretext of security and progress, liberated us from our land, resources, culture, dignity and future. They violated every treaty they ever made with us. I use the word "liberated" loosely and sarcastically, in the same vein that I view their use of the words "collateral damage" when they kill innocent men, women, and children.

They describe people defending their homeland as terrorists, savages and hostiles, and accuse us of being aggressors. We have never fought a battle or war that was not on our own land; we never fired the first shot ... ever.

My words reach out to the non-Indian: Look now before it's far too late - see what is being done to others in your name and see what destruction you sanction when you say nothing. Your own treaty, the one between yourselves and the government, is being violated daily; this treaty is commonly known as the Constitution.

With us, they started a little at a time, encroaching on our rights until we had none at all. It will be the same for the Constitution; this is not conjecture, but fact. We are not embattled with the color of man, but with the weakness of man, a mindset that lusts for power and wealth at the expense of life.

Men of all colors, cultures and religions must stand together to oppose the genocidal policies that face us all as the corporate world seeks to enslave all, and pit one nation against another.

If you avoid breaking laws and do what you're told and ignore the poor, the oppressed and the downtrodden - you probably won't be bothered. If you try to right what is wrong, however, you will surely meet great opposition and run the risk of imprisonment or death.

I am a Sun Dancer. I took a vow for my people. I chose to seek the Creator's will and to follow it to the best of my ability. I WILL NOT STAND DOWN FROM THAT VOW. I will continue to speak, write and organize until Grandfather himself quiets my life. If I can do this in prison, I have no doubt you can do much better from where you stand.

I encourage you to do your best, be kind to one another, seek harmony and balance with all natural life, enjoy what freedom you have left, and most of all, never, never give up.

In the Spirit of Crazy Horse,
Leonard Peltier

Leonard isn't a "non-violent criminal". He is an innocent man and political prisoner. Bill Clinton said he would pardon Leonard, but didn't. Indians don't have the payolla or political clout it seems.

63. Ugh! This disgusts me
"Rumors that Clinton was considering a Christmas pardon for Peltier swept through the FBI, angering agents from coast to coast and prompting an unprecedented march of thousands of current and former FBI agents in Washington in December to demand that Peltier's clemency request be rejected."

He bowed to the pressure even though he knew the FBI had framed this guy, and that's why they didn't want him released. As long as they can keep the title "convicted murderer" on LP, they can continue the charade that they are enforcers of the law. :grr:

15. Truth is revealed by ACTION, not words.
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 09:51 PM by BeHereNow
I think I know all I need to know
about the Clinton Clan by their actions.
Many of which set the stage for the
abuses by the Bush Clan we are witnessing now.
I get flamed for saying it here on DU, but
frankly, no matter to me.
People who ignore or do not understand or KNOW their own history.
or worse, insist on ONLY knowing the parts that
make them "feel good" are fools in my book.

11. Good on you- the system is making it VERY hard on the LPDC-
Moving Leonard all over the place is by design.
It makes it very difficult for his lawyers and supporters,
not to mention how hard it is on Leonard himself.
It is deliberate and indicative of their malevolent
nature and collective guilt.
If you can help the LPDC, they can use it-
they are facing additional costs due to the fact that
Leonard has been tracked for a "bus tour" of the UPSs
The technique is well known among those of us who
work with victims of the system.

Truer words have never been spoken.
That is why I get so frustrated by
the disconnect of the "Average American" to the
past and history.
People do NOT as a rule understand the
BIG picture of which we are ALL a part of.
We CAN NOT affect the present without
balancing the past.
Karma, if you will.

Good to have the "primer" as you say on the case.
I am CONSTANTLY astounded by the number
of people who have no frame of reference about the FACTS on Leonard's case.
Even here on DU, people continue to refer to the case
based on the PROPAGANDO dished out by "the powers that be"
from thirty years ago.
Amazing when you think about it.

44. Wiping away tears,
or, as Poor George puts it, lacerations.

I'm lost for words ...... well, almost ...

This is a story I'd never heard before, but sadly it's one of so many tales of innocence locked away so it can't corrupt the guilty.

Leonard is a great man, but he is not the only one. We all have the ability within us to be great, and if he can achieve so much from a prison cell, how much more can we achieve in our freedom? It's up to us, we can learn from his example, take on his courage, and thoroughly commit ourselves to our ideals. Then, instead of just one light burning in prison, we can have hundreds of thousands of lights burning throughout the country.

More and more people are finding resources within themselves that they never knew they had. It will happen.

The really important topics, Cheney's knees for instance,
are why I keep posting LP udates on a regular

Eventually perhaps people will get the big picture.
Its the constant drops of water
that make the deepest well.
Cognitive disconnect is an affliction that
has been years in the making; it will take years
in the unmaking.
Glad to have you as a partner in this work.
I think it will be a lifetime endeavor for us and the
others we have yet to meet.

77. Kicking with an excerpt from an interview with LP:
From an interview with LP:

"The United States government can indict you on something, and now you've got to prove your innocence. And that's not the Constitution of the United States. But that's what's happening with the right-wing fascist conservative bull that's going on in this country. People don't realize, or don't want to wake up and see what's really happening. This is the same thing that the Nazi party did during their taking control of Germany. They started with their judiciary system, and nobody in Germany believed it could happen there either."

117. gotta admit...hurts like hell just to think about it...
Btw, a really good read by someone who was there...amazing testimony to the power of the human Spirit to go through hell and come out HUMAN!

Woody Kipp

Vietcong at Wounded Knee

http://www.moscowfood.coop/books/casey5.html
Blurb from a review:

You probably know some things about Wounded Knee, and you probably know some things about the Vietnam War. You might know some things about the forces that have shaped the lives of present day Native American men. And you might know some things about Vietnam vets. If you read Vietcong at Wounded Knee: The Trail of a Blackfeet Activist by Woody Kipp, you might be surprised by how little you know of an experience that puts all these things together. Woody Kipp grew up on the Blackfeet reservation, just a generation away from the last buffalo hunt. He served as a Marine in Vietnam, and he was present at the occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973. How impressive, you might think, what a witness to history. But what history and as written by whom?

Kipp seemed to be unable to get with the program as a Marine. His natural impulse for settling a conflict with his commanding officer was to fistfight. He felt most at ease wandering alone in Vietnamese villages, chatting and joking in pidgin English and sign language. Observing his manners, his skin, his features, Vietnamese people told him, “You same same Vietcong.” When his tour there ended, he didn’t seem to get much with any program stateside either.

His experience at the standoff at Wounded knee starts out with a road trip—young people fueled with unfocused passion who have no money and a dubious vehicle heading to where the action is. Pinned down in a South Dakota field by flares and gunfire he is struck by another, deeper truth of “You same same Vietcong.” His experience and welfare were of no value to American culture, and in fact, he was dispensable and in the way. At that point he begins to see the trail, his own trail into a life of meaningful personal activism. As a trail, it isn’t straight, and there are many arrivals along the way. It’s a richer and more plausible route than the superhighway of contemporary history.

142. First of all KICKED AND NOMINATED
This is total insanity. I've been following Leonard's case since the Clinton years, when Clinton promised to pardon him and then reneged. Whenever I'm asked to defend my anti-Clinton stance I bring that up. There is no reason on earth for Leonard to be in jail. Everyone from the feds to the prosecutors have admitted he was railroaded, are they so afraid of him that they need him behind bars?
Nearly half a million people marched on Washington Saturday, protesting the fact that we invaded and are occupying a country, killing their people, consuming their resources, and subverting their culture.... ringing any bells? We have ignored the Native American's plight for far too long. We need to start making some restitution, start reinstating the treaties and get this poor guy out of freakin jail. Can you imagine being in prison for 30 YEARS, and 20 of those have been after the feds and prosecutors admitted the case was a fraud. I'd be going nuts. I'm pissed off and I'm a white man from the outside. I can only imagine what it's like.

152. i have never forgiven, and will never forgive clinton for that. i live
utterly disgusted by that cowardice - or worse - he revealed in those last hours. i will never forget it, the agonizing torment of realizing he was not going to free Leonard.

and we were so sure he would, that it was too late to do any more to convince him by the time he walked away.

aaarrrrrrrghhh.....

please keep on

162. Thunderheart and Incident at Oglala.
Edited on Tue Sep-27-05 08:37 AM by myrna minx

Tough but moving, Thunderheart is an unusual story about an arrogant FBI agent (Val Kilmer) who participates in a federal investigation of a murder on an Oglala Sioux reservation. Kilmer's character is part Sioux himself, a detail that leaves him cold as he sets about pushing his way through the community to find facts on the case. In time, however, he begins to feel an ethnic tug and grows increasingly sympathetic to the locals and hostile toward his fellow G-men, much to the dismay of his agency mentor (Sam Shepard). The script is based on real events that occurred on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975 in South Dakota (involving an armed standoff between Indian activists and the FBI, an event that prompted Thunderheart director Michael Apted to make a companion documentary, Incident at Oglala). The conclusion of Thunderheart feels like politically charged whimsy, but the real strength of the film is Kilmer's outstanding performance as a man in transformation. Apted's clear-eyed depiction of the Sioux's spiritual and cultural continuity with the past has none of the cloying romanticism of other films about Indians. Produced by Robert De Niro. --Tom Keogh --

Based on the documentary Incident at Oglala
The review on Amazon is milquetoast and does not do this film justice. This is an excellent documentary that all Americans should see.

Incident at Oglala

Robert Redford is the executive producer (and narrator) of this fine, eye-opening documentary about the violent events that took place in 1975 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Indian activists ended up in an extended standoff with FBI agents, and the result was several deaths, including two federal men whose killing (according to many people) was never clearly attributed to a specific gunman. Nevertheless, the government laid blame for the tragedy on Leonard Peltier, a Sioux political leader who has long been a focus for supporters believing he took the fall, possibly heroically, for others. Peltier has spent many years in prison, and Apted's film, which is hardly ambiguous in its commitment toward Peltier's hoped-for freedom, is persuasive in both its detail and its case against brutal federal policies toward Indians. Whatever one's position on the Peltier question, this is a compelling piece of work. --Tom Keogh --This text refers to the VHS Tape edition.
