Christopher Hitchens on C-Span 2...
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 09:18 PM by mcctatas
as he is praising shrub, it occured to me that they may be kindred spirits (or kindred in spirits). Hitch is a wonder, all aglow with flop sweat, gin blossoms and red puffy eyes, much like recent pictures of our pResident. Oh Christ now he's bitchin about Galloway again...but what's this, the crowd boos!!!
*on edit: I think this is the debate between the two, could be good viewing!

1. I saw him on Bill Maher's show Friday night. He was really
nasty and arrogant with Galloway sitting beside him. Galloway didn't let him get his goat as I'm sure he was trying. Who the hell does he think he is anyway? I've seen the unkempt slob for years and I've yet to figure him out.

14. He is very arrogant
And thinks he's holier than Galloway. One reason why I like Galloway is how he is towards people. He doesn't act like he's better than someone else. He just presents what he knows. Hitchens definitley gets to me. Oy.

15. I wish Galloway interrupted him on that show
Ugh. He was so rude on Maher's show. I think Galloway and that lady were trying to be poliet to Bill or something. I don't know. But yeah that show was really annoying.

13. I saw most of it and it wasn't bad
That Hitchens guy though really got on my nerves. Galloway stayed cool and kept to the facts and was very down to earth. I would've loved to seen that. It must be cool to live in NYC and have things like that come to your town. :) Funny how he opposed the war in Irak in 1991 and now he's for it in 2005. :eyes: Is he getting anything out of this besides book profits and stuff? Makes one wonder. Why was he against it in 1991?

17. Most here hate Hitchens because they like Galloway
Both Hitchens and Galloway are pro-war; they just want different sides to win. They both are leftists, too. But everything in the political discussion these days has to be Mothra against Godzilla, black vs. white, us vs. them. Well, for my money, both of these guys are part of "us." Maybe a bit more nuance is called for.

Read Why Orwell Matters, or The Trial of Henry Kissinger, before engaging in ad hominem attacks on Hitchens. They are minor masterpieces of political commentary and analysis. If you dislike what Hitchens says, then analyze and dismantle his ideas. It's no easy task. Hitchens may not be a cover boy for GQ but he is one smart motherfucker, and he transported his ass to Iraq and saw things for himself, with his own eyes. If you disagree with every single thing he says, fine, but no one can say the man doesn't do his homework. He's no slug, and he's no popinjay. Galloway would further his cause better by easing off the insults and focusing more on incisive rhetoric.

Peace.

19. I am not in the habit of engaging in ad hominem attacks without at least
some analysis. Unlike some on DU, I am not entirely anti-war, and agree with Galloway on the Palestinian issue, his stance against the Iraq war under Bush Sr., and Bush the lesser. Hitchens, in my humble opinion, has lost all credibility since he refuses to critically analyze the issues on the Iraq war, not just because he happens to have an opinion contrary to mine, but because I know he is NOT a stupid man. He has hitched his ideaological wagon to a corrupt policy and a corrupt regime, and that makes him a slug. Galloway's stance has never changed, he is against empire in any form, does not support foreign policies based on "lucrative arrangements" between governments, and has always been outspoken to the point of rude (at times). Many other reporters have been to Iraq and did not see the same glowing portrait Hitchens paints. Popinjay, I'm not sure, slug, definately!

22. Hitchens' argument that you don't abandon comrades is ironic
considering what he did to Sidney Blumenthal. Abandoning comrades is his MO, come to think of it.

It's not a very strong argument, either--setting aside that no one but he claims to be the comrade of the Kurds (or one of their factions, anyway). Why is he in favor of building up a phony Iraq based on neocon principles if he just wants self-determiniation for his Kurdish brethren? Why not wish or work for dissolution of Iraq? Or does he view supporting Bushism in Iraq as ultimately supporting dissolution?

Galloway may not be the purest of men, either, but at least his arguments--particularly on the fundamentalism driving the Sistani bloc--were cogent.
