Republicans becoming like far-right parties in Europe
I'm very engrossed in European politics and I've noticed the very strong resemblences of some Republicans to far-right parties there. People like Tom Tancredo sound like Austria's Jorg Haider of and the FPO (Freedom Party) and France's Jean Marie Le Pen and his FN (National Front) with their anti-immigrant rhetoric. It's scary to see that politicians here have embraced some of the same ideals of these parties which are considered way out of the mainstream in their respective countries. Unlike in those countries, the far-right has masked themselves as mainstream to the American people, hiding their views. Also, in the example of the BNP (British National Party) they play of single issues to sway some voters who don't know their true intent. The BNP has won council seats in England playing on immigration issues, almost the same way Republicans use social issues to get votes. On the values and morals aspect, The Republicans also have mirrored in some aspects the Turkish Welfare Party, which said it wanted to bring Islamic morals and values to Turkey. That didn't set right with Turkey's secular constitiution and the party was eventually banned. The Republicans are bringing ideas that are not accepted in the Western World, but have been incognito about them until now when it's unraveling.

These are links to read about these people and their parties.

1. And the far right in Europe uses the US Repubs as cover
Jorg Haider even said that his politics weren't far from the American Republican Party, implying that he should be accorded some respect as a mainstream position.

The "no bones about it" fascists in Europe are open brethren to US republicans.

2. Haven't they always been far right? They've just been held in check by
past administrations.

Yet, the muzzle has been off these past 5 years and they are foaming at the mouth to do more damage!

3. Yes, deep down they've always been the Party of Hoover and McCarthy
rather than the Party of Lincoln and TR.

4. There's a big difference
The Far Right doesn't dominate European politics.

5. But its getting stronger by the day
soon they will dominate. I live in Holland the power of the right wing has diminished someway but elsewhere in Europe they are getting bigger. Heard today on the radio that the flemmish blok is the second biggest party now.

6. That's pretty scary
Why is the right gaining power in Europe? I hope they're not swallowing American Conservative propoganda.

8. It's the same deal here in Norway
A right-wing anti-immigration party got 581,857(22,1%) of a total of 3,421,741 votes. The assumed result before the election was 17%. They're second to the social-democrats now. Stupid, stupid Norwegians..

7. That's the danger
Europeans have cut through the far right's crap, but they American people haven't and gave them power.

10. There are some parallels but the big difference
is that secular Europe does not have a ready made pool of ignorant bible-thumpin' fundamentalists for the reich wing to capitalize on. Without that base of morans, there is a natural cap on how much the far right can gain in most European countries. Remember that LePen got squashed by Chirac.
