Ah, my very first protest! I had a great time--and unlike my grandfather feared, I didn't get arrested ;-). The march was great and when a few mangy freepers began yelling at us I told them "If you support the war go enlist!!!"

Moving on to the day of the Protest March

Each of these papers, attached to rope, bore the picture and name of a soldier killed in Iraq. During the march volunteers carried the rope bearing the photos/names. It was a "chain of the dead" that was very striking.


It was wonderful to see that even young children were getting involved

I must disagree that it is "wonderful to see that even young children were getting involved" however.

We must remember that programming children with opinions is something best left to the short-sighted.

I remember a young girl, perhaps 14, standing outside planned parenthood with a sign that read; "Planned Parenthood killed (umpteen million) babies last year".

So I stopped and asked her, "Say... do you know how many children and families Planned Parenthood helped last year?"

She said 'no'.
I said, "I know you don't."

That girl was not there because she came to those conclusions herself, and we should all keep that in mind.

I agree though. Even though it is nice to see. I think that the kids should be able to make up their own minds if they are old enough to really know and understand. And hey at least you gave that girl something to think about at Planned Parenthood.

her family and they washed it clean out of her mind...

At least until she's older.

My 11 year old son is bright enough to understand the peak oil supply-demand concept, and I've even explained to him why we are in the Middle East...

But I always tell him that those are MY opinions and not his... he has to earn his own opinions through study and not just by adopting the views of those around him.

He gets it.

black children during the civil rights movement were jailed for boycotting school, filling the streets for equal rights when their parents couldn't afford to miss work those days.

When my son was young, I felt that talking to him honestly about politics was the responsible way to parent. I brought him along to many rallies and marches so that he could see democracy in action. This war, its costs and consequences, will affect the rest of these children's lives. It's assumptive and irresponsible to think that these kids are being used as pawns. Perhaps they are home schooled and this is their classroom. Just because you don't approve of the anti-abortion message Fundies pass on to their children doesn't mean passing family values isn't inherently a parents' responsibility.

And that really is the point here.

Many parents are not willing to even mention what, if any, merits the 'other side' has.

Children are taught to irrationally hate... is that a 'parent's responsibility'?

I took my two boys this weekend. Unlike the fundie freak children who are brainwashed I tell my boys know the truth period. They are not "programmed"! I tell them the lies the administration tells then I give them the truth.

What am I supposed to tell them about the current resident? I can't even imagine the lies I would have to come up with to cover for their crimes.

Do you tell them why they lie?

Have you explained the PNAC?
Have you explained that these people believe that they can take over the world for the good of humanity?
(And of course they're nuts for thinking so)

One side of any argument is always 100% correct until it meets the other.

Then maybe it's only %80 right. But presenting only one side of any argument is essentially 'brainwashing'.

I talk to my 11 year old about these things. He's bright enough to grasp both the 'Peak Oil' concept as well as 'Abiotic Petroleum Genesis' theory.

He gets what this administration is trying to do and understands how I feel about them but he is told that he is not allowed to have my opinions... he must develop his own by learning what questions to ask.

it is more difficult for my eight year old but my ten year old grasps all of it. Most of their friends come from winger families and they see the difference for themselves.

If the children are well-adjusted, then such grave matters only lend them broader perspective rather than afflict their psyche.

I have had to do some damage control when I hear my son say 'Bush is stupid' because 'uncle Dan said so'.

I have to ask him how he would come to that conclusion himself and what questions he would need to ask in order to do so. Then I tell him that even then, whatever conclusion he came to would still be an opinion and not necessarily 100% correct.

I'll leave the brainwashing of children to the hate-mongers.

One thing I loved about the rally was sooo many people of all ages were there. Little kids to grandparents and all cultures too! I loved it, I only wish I could've been there. :( All the signs you showed were great too! The first sign you showed the artist was very talented. I'm glad you had your first successful protest! Oh and I also like your little icon at the end in your signature with the sheep and the kool-aid. LOL!
