Reno police officers describe experiences in New Orleans

The six Reno police officers who helped keep law and order in Hurricane Katrina-torn New Orleans were amazed at the devastation and blatant crime, and felt like they were in a foreign land.

But they took comfort in the unity they shared with displaced citizens and fellow law enforcement officers.

"Despite all of the bad ... I didn't think I would ever want to come back here as a tourist," said Officer Sean Jones, "but we had a real bond with the police there and saw all the good in people, the true spirit of Americans wanting to help. Now I'm excited to see it rebuild."

Sgt. Paul Pitsnogle and Officers Jones, Charlie de St. Maurice, Terry Naughton, Dan Parker and Darren Swetkovich left Sept. 2 in an armored police SWAT vehicle. Except for Naughton, all are on the department's SWAT team. They returned to Reno on Sept. 15.
