a good conversation with someone from the other side

I went to the peace rally this weekend on the PeaceAction bus from Wisconsin. We were left at a train stop and we had to take the metro downtown. On the train there were a couple of native DCers on their way to work. One of them saw my sign (Bring Our National Guard Home Now) and he asked me if I actually knew anyone in the National Guard (which I do). He was on his way to do some contract maintenance work at the FBI building.

Turns out he had a military background and had several family members currently serving. We went through all the standard arguments about WHY we have troops in Aghanistan and Iraq, yadda yadda Other people joined in to the conversation on both sides, but it stayed rational and peaceful.

I told the guy I respected his opinion and that we'd only be taking over his city for a few days.

He smiled and said, That's OK, its YOUR city too. :)

1. That gives me hope.

Maybe a civil war will not be necessary. But then, I know that the exponents of that war were quite decent to each other and polite in conversation too.

3. conversations in public are very valuable

because a lot of thoughtful people have opinions about what's going on. If you and a friend get into a back & forth type of discussion in a public place (lunch counter, doctor's office etc)

People will be dying to get their two-cents in.

It is a very very valuable teaching opportunity..
