My encounter w Fundie X-ians in DC on Sunday.
I went to DC for the rally with my husband and children (ages 7 and 9). On Sunday we took the kids to the Smithsonian and National Gallery. On our way to the Smithsonian we saw these 4 men toking bibles and bullhorns ahead of us. Two men in black suits wearing yamulkas crossed path with these men. The 4 men stopped and started yelling hateful rhetoric about how only Jesus Christ was the true lord and how they worshipped satan through their bull horn. The two men shook their heads and continued on their way.

Our blood was boiling as we approached these despicable men. "How dare you insult those men. Jesus Christ would preach tolerance of others" I said. "You are nothing but a bunch of hateful, despicable miscreants" (probably not the best term but in a heated moment one does not ponder multiple meanings). My husband joined in and they started to insult us over the bull horn: "satan loving, blah blah blah..., can't control your wife, blah blah blah" and finally my husband said "FUCK YOU" to them. My children were actually cracking up at this encounter saying "those are bu$hbots, right?" Then men continued throwing insults to us over the bullhorn as we entered the Natural History Museum.

After our visit to the Smithsonian, we journeyed over to the National Gallery were we ecnountered the Pro War Protest. The backdrop was a huge American flag (a telltale sign). There were perhaps 200 pro war attendees (the above men must have been on their way to this rally) and probably more porta potties than pro-war people.

They were yelling through that bullhorn and pumping their Bibles like free weights long before the march even began.

8. While it must have been majorly annoying to have your Sunday field trip
pissed on by the clowns who confuse themselves with God, it was a very sound illustration for your kids and they got the message. THAT will serve them well in their futures. Take heart in that fact.

Not only did you and your husband stand up to bullies, you showed your kids what you are made of and that one SHOULD speak truth to lies, even if the lies are louder.

You and your family have done much to restore my hope for all our futures! Thank you for sharing your adventure with us!

9. Sounds exactly like a college campus in the Spring!
I grew up in a college town. Every Spring, Brother Jedd arrived on campus and stood in the center for two or three days shouting "Whores! Sinners! Jesus is the only truth, repent!" to students and staff walking past. He always drew a crowd that had a lot of fun taunting and ridiculing him.

It was entertaining at times. But, it was also disconcerting to be a target of his when a large crowd wasn't present. I often wondered if he managed to pick up a few followers on those trips. I suspect he did.

There was a time when we looked at these people as the fanatical lunatics they are. We didn't have to worry about having them intrude on our daily lives, insisting compliance in the name of freedom and justice through Jayeeesus. Those were the good ole days though. *sigh*

Oh wait, we're from the same state. Maybe it was the same school. Our fanatic used to make me so mad. It's one thing to get up there to rant and rave about whatever topic you want, but to insult people was another. Unfortunately, you really couldn't avoid him if you had to get to class, since he stood right in the middle of the campus.

I saw him at three different schools in Ohio & Indiana in the late 70s and early 80s. At one school when he hit a girl who was ignoring him over the head with his Bible a bunch of jocks picked him up and tossed him in a shallow "moat" around the Student Building.

Because we ALSO had one of those types there on campus every year.

But mostly I noticed that most folks just completely ignored him. Walked by as if he was invisible. Almost embarassed for him.

10. The "Christians" in this country are so out of touch with the gospel.
Bad, bad preaching. We gave up our church membership because we couldn't stand all the crap that's going on in our churches. They preach from best-selling books instead of the Bible. All the sermons are about how to get God to give you more stuff ... oh yeah, that was before the "fight for our freedoms." Couldn't tell you what they're preaching now, but it apparently ain't a message of peace!

I'm sorry you had to encounter those pseudo-Christians, although I'm very glad you could be there. Thank you!

11. I seriously think these people suffer
from either mental illness (dependency issues) or brain washing. My MIL and SIL are among them. When MIL gets vehement and really nasty, there is a glazed look which comes over her. I've known this woman for 30 years, and she only got like this over the last 5 years or so. My SIL made a queer statement to me when we went on our very first (and maybe last) extended family vacation this summer. She said "Oh, 10 days - we're gonna be in nowhere land for 10 days? I don't know if I can afford to miss church 2 weekends in a row." Nowhere land to her is heaven to me -- Rodanthe, NC. There are churches on the Outer Banks, just none she deemed appropriate. The campground had a non-denominational service and she went. DH, myself and our two kids locked our camper door and slept in.

My daughter said "Mom, when you get old you're not gonna get all wierd like grandmom, are you?"

I told her "Hell, no! And if I do, put me out of my misery because you know I'm not in touch with reality."

91. According to reichwingers, Cindy Sheehan (and, by proxy, us) has been
making "anti-Semitic" statements - anti-Jewish.

Because she is associated with "the loony left", and because of them lying about what she says, we are now "haters of Jews" (which surprises me, since the KKK seems to be more in line with what the Repukes are all about).

Anyway, two men in yamulkas would appear to be Jewish - and the fundie freaks start wailing on them because they're "Jewish" - don't believe in Jesus. Big no-no in their idea of tolerance.

So, since "we on the left are the party who hates Jews" (mainly because we also believe that Palestinians are human, too), these people are "horning in on our territory" (:sarcasm:) because they hate the Jewish appearing people.

Better? Clearer?

I'm just curious because my fundy mom nearly crammed a bible down my throat for saying the word "fuck" in front of my 12-year-old nephew (now 14). Yet, the war in Iraq is just fine by her.

Fundies are weird. Their "morality" is all about sex and "swear" words: things that don't actually hurt anybody.

27. My kids are 7 and 9. We never used to swear in front of them but they are
aware that certain words are inappropriate. They also are aware that using those words are nowhere as bad as spewing hatred, starting a war based on lies, leaving the poor to de-hydrate and starve in 100 degree heat, stealing an election, etc.

My children are veteran peace marchers, prior to the war and of course during the war. They also marched after the election theft in Ohio last fall. I do have a funny story about our march on Saturday. When we were in front of the White House among the huge mass of protestors, the crowd erupted en masse with a symbolic flipping off the president. Marek is aware that this is usually inappropriate but asked if he and his sister could join in. What could a mother do but explain that this administration was so evil that yes they could and we did a family middle finger salute to his evilness.

Not that I don't value readily-available toilet facilities, but these freeper events always seem to have abnormally high potty-to-participant ratios.

Do they overestimate attandance that drastically (consistently), or do they get their bowels in an uproar in more ways that one?

42. I've had similar experiences locally with bullhorn-toting fundies.
The best one was with a couple of guys who were trading the bullhorn back and forth and "broadcasting" the usual hellfire and brimstone crap. I happened to walk by them as they were trading the bullhorn and asked in the swishiest voice I could manage, "So are you two lovers or what?" It enraged the one with the bullhorn so bad that he put it to his lips and let fly with an extremely loud "fuck you!" at which point the cops who were patroling the area promptly moved in and took the guys away.

Not sure what happened to them or whether they were charged (though I imagine they were cited for disorderly conduct at least) but the cops got a big hand from the people hanging around the area for removing the mini-scourge.

and asked "what the HELL they were even talking about?" I wasn't kidding, either...I just thought they were freaks-

You know, rallies bring out all types. I think your kids had the best response!

Should've told 'em "Oh, we're not MARRIED!" Let 'em chew on that one for a while.

They sound like so many at our college (Mount Vernon Nazarene--yeah, the one that got Kenyon's voting machines). People like that are even scarier when you get to know them.

64. thank you. My son's tee shirt read:
FRONT:
My America has more colors than just red, white and blue

BACK:
America's diversity is America's strength. Don't just tolerate diversity. Defend it. Celebrate it. Contribute to it.

Sure beats corporate logos for a message to our kids, doesn't it?

69. Thanks!
Here is the link to the T-shirt in case anyone else is interested...

<http://www.cafepress.com/cp/browse/store/irregulargoods.8076421>

I still want to make a shirt quoting the local Unitarian minister. He visited Israel/Palestine and he talked with dozens and dozens of people on all sides of the issues. When he talked to one conservative member of the Likkud that person told him that he had met only fringe elements, with loonies... Bill's retort:

So long as walls, weapons, and wars are considered the solution by the so-called 'sane' - I'll stand with the insane.

And it sure does beat corporate logos. Our 12 year-old was supposed to go with us, but he caught a stomach virus. He gave me his video camera, though, and I got a lot of it on tape for him.

75. Good job....except......
....for the "F--- You" part. Yeah, I enjoy a good well placed f-word once in a great while, but it doesn't exactly put you on the debate team. Those idiots probably live to hear that.

I know it was hubby who did it, a perfect time for you to grin real big and say "I can't control him sometimes".

80. "can't control your wife" sounds like the same misogynist crap
the freepers spewed at our local rally on Saturday. They kept harping on the fact that so many women were speakers.

Proof that Republicans hate vaginas.
