Before everyone devolves into utter craziness about Cindy's arrest...
Cindy Sheehan obviously knew she was going to get arrested.

This was a publicity stunt. I doubt she may have known in NYC, which she may have been lead to believe was a professional rally, hence her surprise.

Don't blame the police for arresting her. They're doing their job. They probably helped - they went to who would make the biggest news first, went by the book, and took her away, right? Who knows, maybe the local people in the event know the police officers who arrested her.

Imagine if the 100,000 rally didn't have a permit.

That's what "civil disobedience" is - disobeying civil authority.

That said, I'm not suggesting doing nothing. They probably want and expect the "Free Cindy" effort. Try to find out what they want.

But calm down, organize your thoughts, and each other.

6. oh come on...
a protest in order to raise awareness for one's cause is, by definition, a publicity stunt.

MLK used publicity stunts, aka protests or sit ins to get his word across.

Just because the word doesn't suit you doesn't mean it's not so.

A "publicity stunt" can be a GOOD THING. Sorry if I'm in marketing.

16. "Stunt" has a fairly strong negative connotation. I wouldn't use that word
to describe a morality-based act of civil disobedience. (As in "I saw that stunt you pulled!")
I understood what you meant, but I would call bad choice of words on it.

It was clearly planned and has a long tradition. The suffragettes chained themselves to the fences in Washington in the 1910s. I believe they were abused in jail, though. I'm sure the anti-suffrage crowd thought they were pulling a "stunt." The suffragettes, on the other hand, saw it as using the only power they could find to get what should have been theirs in the first place.

7. Rabid is correct.
When civil disobedience occurs, arrests can be expected. Did you expect * and crew to come out and offer her tea and cakes? No, they did what we expect them to do--react with the sheer force of the illegitimate power they hold now. This civil disobedience is the same tool MLK used and with great skill. It is the only tool available now in a system that has been usurped by tyrannical forces. More will be arrested before this is over, and violence may be used against dissenters. Resolve and disobedience are our swords, and truth is our armor.

9. Sorry about being defensive, too...
I haven't even seen drudge today...

"publicity stunt" is in my vocabulary, as is "politician" - both as good things - as well as bad...

Sort of like technology - it's not inherently evil - it is what you make of it.

3. Yes - likely they did it when they knew it was a small crowd. To be
civil disobedient with a crowd of 100,000 is just plain dangerous. Police are human too. They get scared & make bad decisions. Look at NO.

She didn't get arrested in NY. Her mike was just taken because they didn't have a permit for a mike & and amplifier.

That's what happens when we're pushed to our limits. Liberal bashing needs to stop!

19. sacrifice
The folks that were taken away aren't sitting in a jail dragging a cup on the bars.

The reports said they would be fingerprinted etc. and given a ticket and that was it.

The point was to just get taken away in the first place, to get the cameras focused on the real issue.

Who knows what would be the result of today. A very volatile event could cause a number of results.

It was a tactic designed to keep public focus on the cause!

Okay, okay... a publicity stunt. :hi:

Thanks for making sense, nerd.

12. I'm not trying to kill anyone's "high" or adrenaline...
Just trying to get people to focus on finding out what the next step to do is in "the plan", since it was planned ahead of time, instead of mourning her arrest.

10. This was planned - the entire thing choreographed
They had a permit to march today from the elipse to the WH. They planned the civil disobedience to the letter. The first group would sit, be arrested and the next line would then sit down. Not everyone that attended this rally will participate in the civil disobedience and be arrested. Some will just be witnesses.

Those that planned to participate were briefed this morning on what to do, what not to do, who to contact and where to go when released. Their bail money was gathered before hand so that they know they will be bailed out too.

It is quite ingenious really. It reminds me of the types of "firing lines" from the revolutionary war. You always had the front line that fired first. Those that were shot fell and their spot was filled with those from the next line as they marched onward to face the enemy. They took a page out of history and they are making it work for them.

Good on them. March on!

13. They had to expect people (like DU) to want to rally at the Police HQ...
Any idea what they want supporters to funnel energy into while she's jailed?

For every minute/hour she's in jail, $1,000 will be raised for X?

Should calls go to the WH/Senators/CongressCritters instead of the police to free Cindy?

14. I hadn't heard of any idea for fundraising while she is in jail
She shouldn't be there very long at all. Overnight at best I would think. Once arraigned, bail set, she will be released pending hearing. It's pretty standard stuff really.

You might contact UFPJ and see if they have any ideas about fundraising though. It could be a good thing for expenses yet to come while she continues to travel around to speak.

20. Jail time
It probably wouldn't raise much since they aren't in jail:

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/09/26/D8CS5JB00.html

" Park Police Sgt. L.J. McNally said Sheehan and the others would be taken to a processing center where they would be fingerprinted and photographed, then given a ticket and released. The process would take several hours, he said."

18. Ghandi tactic, according to the 1982 movie. Let the British beat the first
line of protestors. They fall away and then the next line takes their place. People off to the side tend to the injured. Non-violent response.

It's a fun thing to have happened. She was correct in forcing them them arrest her - call it whatever makes you happy. Are you the new PC policeman around here - telling us how to celebrate Cindy's arrest?

I have no idea what the point of your post is honestly
