I've commented on several psts with this, but just so everyone makes sure to see it, United for Peace and Justice had planned a civil disobedience for Monday for a long time now. Here's a link:

Also, yes, demonstrating without a permit is what she's being arrested for. And no, that doesn't violate the Constitution -- at least, according to the Supreme Court (see: Thomas v. Chicago Park District, 2002).

I'm not saying I agree with that SCOTUS decision, but there it is. Hope this answers a few questions.

only comes into play when there are public areas blocked off... or if you are using a loud speaker... unless she threw herself in front of every person who tried to used that sidewalk, unless she completely blocked public use of that sidewalk.

i know this might seem like splitting hairs, but that is exactly what lawyers are paid to do.

It'll fly in court. In any case, it's only a small fine.

One that will be answered with time. My first reaction is that the smile on her face humanizes her to people who only know her through more-serious newsclips -- thus, it's a good thing. But time will tell.

Why should she put on a fake mug for the camera's. Getting arrested for sitting ot the sidewalk IS a joke - I think laughing at the absurity of the situation is appropriate and does make her look more human.

I don't know when Cindy herself threw her hat in the arrestee ring. Just pointing out that civil resistance had been planned on this day for a while.
Cindy (like every other participant) had to decide for herself to pop a squat on the sidewalk and get carted away by the badges.
