PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) - A jailed Roman Catholic priest who was prevented from becoming a presidential candidate because he is in prison has been suspended from his church duties for his political activities.
The Rev. Gerard Jean-Juste, a prominent figure in the party of ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, was informed of his suspension in a letter from the Msgr. Joseph Serge Miot, the archbishop of Port-au-Prince.
Miot, who called Jean-Juste "a son, a brother and a friend," said he was compelled to act because the jailed priest allowed activists of Aristide's Lavalas Family party to attempt to register him as a presidential candidate in the Nov. 20 elections.
Such overt political activism, the archbishop wrote, is in conflict with church law.
