Dr. Ben Marble is not happy with DU
Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 08:28 PM by Hardhead
This is the guy who told Cheney to go fuck himself. I think Dr. Marble has some anger management issues at the moment:

"I got on a website, democraticunderground.com just to talk to some of these people that were sending me these emails and ****** the extremists on the left are just as hypocritical as extremists on the right. I tried to discuss issues with compromise and what I see as real world solutions. I consider myself a realist. People try to label me a liberal because of what I said, but I think of myself as a realist and..."

And bla, bla, bla. You can read the rest of his whining (and some reader comments) at:
http://www.smirkingchimp.com/article.php?sid=22905&mode=nested&order=0

I don't want to get into why he has departed our fair community (for obvious reasons), but he sounds just like all those poor rubes who can't believe that there are people who actually enforce the rules. They come here thinking that this is some sort of free-speech paradise where they can say anything to anyone. And then, boo hoo, they locked my thread! Why'd they do that? Why-

It's really not that hard to speak your mind here, if you play within bounds. (Just look at DS1, for fuck's sake!) In all my years here, I'm only aware of one person I felt was booted unfairly. The majority who get it, ask for it, beg for it, even. In fact, I'm kind of surprised I've never been booted, because I'm not a warm fuzzy all the time, believe it or not.

Whatever the hell that went down (and I've heard the tale), I will always have a smile in my heart for the doctor. Anyone who can tell Cheney to fuck himself and walk away gets much respect from me, regardless of those positions we disagree on. That took some big cojones. And he said it three fucking times! Bravo!

*crossing my fingers and hoping this thread is mod-approved*

2. Rob Kall is the guy who wrote the article, Ben Marble is the doctor.

3. God, I really did that, didn't I?
Can I plead that it's been a long day? I'm worn out, but this really resonated with me.

5. Left or right: this is the internets
and that encourages a certain style of discourse that can be sorta harsh. That's the way the cookie bounces.

10. I firmly believe that on the whole, we are less harsh than right-wingers
We have our moments, but we have more good moments than bad, and we do not all march in lockstep to the new fascist overlords. And yes, that's the way the cookie bounces.

12. True, but cutsie kneejerk responses that didn't take alot of thought
often abound. As a friend remarked, posting on a message board is often like driving in traffic, with the same automatic reactions and instinctive moves. Getting folks to think outside their forgone conclusions is sometimes an uphill battle.

But, that said, whining is annoying.

And we wouldn't have him any other way. :)

9. Re Marble's gay marriage stance
Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 08:38 PM by valerief
I think there should be different classes of marriage based on your assets. For example, the richer you are, the more rights you get. The more you go down the asset scale, the more rights you lose.

Hey, wait. We've got that right now!!!!

I confused his name with the interviewer, hehe. Long day. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

14. I hadn't known anything about that, but I found this in the article:
...I don't think so. I pretty much feel the same way. I think maybe it has strengthened them a bit. A lot of people in the local area are not too happy with what I said, because I live in Bush country. But I have a right to say what I want to say and if they don't like it then they should leave to China...

Earlier in the article, he had said that people want to call him a liberal because of what he said to Cheney, but he is not a liberal.

I agree with that.

16. He says a number of offensive things
And liberal is not a tag I'd hang on him. But he questions authority. That is a somewhat redeeming feature in my book. He's not stupid. If I had to point to a stupid doctor, I'd pick Frist.

15. I still don't get why DU worshipped the guy
merely for saying the old FU to Cheneybreath. Really, it would be a no brainer for moi. It's a two second deal. My husband said not most people-they don't have the guts! but me-he knows wouldn't hesitate for a minute.

Hey, I don't agree with everything Cindy Sheehan says but she walks the walk. She's paid and paid and deserves the utmost respect.

One FU does not a man make.

17. He did what most of us wish we had the opportunity to do...
I don't think he's crying or whining in this interview as has been suggested. He's stating his views just like anyone else does when they have an opportunity to do so.

I agree with you on Cindy, but everytime I see her, I can't help but cheer her on :)

22. He broke the rules; and we do have rules here.
We have to - otherwise this place would be a chaotic mess.

Although I greatly admire what Dr. Marble did; the guy has some non-progressive views and didn't 'fit' here very well.

24. Dr. B was booted? thats too bad
But I see his point about there being hypocrites/extremists on both the left and right. That's one of the first things I learned on DU ... the price to pay for having a big tent I guess.
