1. None of the above
It depends upon how long a radically left wing ideology is able to take over the Democratic Party and fight its way to despotism.

The Pendulum has swung as far to the right as it's going to this time, it's on the downswing now and is headed to the left.

Look at what the far right has done to the Republican Party because that will be what the far left will do to the Democratic Party in thirty years or so if the pendumlum swings as fully to the left as it did this time to the right.

3. The Pendulum Can Always Go Further to the Right, Unfortunately

4. have we ever had left wing despotism here?
I wouldn't call FDR or LBJ despots by any stretch of the imagination.

I got to say as well, I bought into all the anti-leftist stuff in the 80s, but looking at Hugo Chavez in Venezuela now, I'm hard pressed to think of any president since FDR in the US who has shown as much concern in terms of concrete actions as Chavez does for his own people, those in neighboring countries, and even the US (even as Bush is trying to off him).

8. We've never swung as far to the Left
as we've swung to the right this time.

2. Mere 6 years between Nixon's resignation
and the start of the "Reagan Revolution."

They'll be back quick if we settle for just kicking them out, instead of hunting them down and putting stakes through their hearts.

5. Was Nixon even close to Reagan let alone Bush on domestic issues?
I thought most of Nixon's sins were with the war and the backroom machinations and not as conservative on domestic policy.

Maybe I'm just fuzzy on this part of history.

I do see Reagan, Newt, and Bush as escalating recurrences of the same political cancer.

I watched a Frontline video on Reagan's dealing with barracks bombing in Lebanon, and compared to Bush, he looked like he was genuinely troubled by the deaths--and he had a memorial service that didn't look like a half time show cheerleading for more war.

6. It never stops. Never. Never. Never.
They are relentless in promoting their agenda and it is a lesson that we need to learn. Electing more Democrats is just a start. We won't have won until we dismantle the Military Industrial Complex and overthrow the fascist corporate control of the world.
How many of our Democratic "leaders" supported and continue to support the war in Iraq? How many voted for the bankruptcy bill? How many support socialized medicine?
