"This whole planet is just us" - Dalai Lama
"Therefore, destruction of another area essentially is destruction of yourself."

Tibet's spiritual leader also urged the audience to develop a wider world perspective, not just focus on "America, America, America."

...In his lecture, "Peace, War and Reconciliation," the Dalai Lama said society's dream should be a world free of nuclear and biological weapons.

He noted their danger -- and their expense, saying some African states have an abundance of weapons, but not enough food..."

1. It's refreshing to hear the Dalai lama speak like this --
-- instead of the fire-belching gay-bashing blood-lusting fundamentalist Christian morons on tv these days.

Godspeed the Dalai Lama.

6. I wonder if he will have a successor?
He said in one interview that he thought he might be the end of the line for dalai lamas.

He also said about hurricane Katrina, that is was a good sign that we show compassion for our fellow man, and this is basic because we are social animals. That this is a beginning, that we ultimately should have compassion for all living things, such as animals.

8. The succession of the Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama has said several times that he seriously considers an end of the institute of the Dalai Lama in case Tibet remains occupied by China. This doesn't mean that he will not reincarnate, because he made a promise to reincarnate as long as suffering remains, but it means that a combined spiritual/political leader will come to an end.

In a way his political power has already been ended during his reign, sicne he no longer has active political power. The only thing which remains is that he is still the spiritual leader of the Gelukpas.

The main reason is that Chinese will probably appoint another Dalai Lama. Just like they did with Panchen Lama, Karmapa and many other important lamas and then cause a fight between the factions. So if the Dalai Lama considers not reincarnating, there is still the problem of the Tibetans not getting the message...
