Did anyone watch News hour with Jim Lehrer last night??
At the end of the hour Gwen Ifell had a discussion with Nancy Lessin of Military Families Speak Out, and Carol Phillips (a former Vietnam Vet) on the pro-war side. I cannot believe how vile and full of hatred Carol Phillips was. She made me want to throw something at the TV!!

You can get a link to the video/audio here:

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/newshour_index.html#

It's at the very bottom of the Monday, September 26th section.

Did anyone else catch that?

2. I did. And I agree.
Carol Phillips was a case study of denial.

The best was her line about us not finishing the job in Vietnam.

7. Indeed
Didn't that make you feel sorry for the poor Iraqis? I wanted to shout at her... which faction of the Iraqi people are we talking about here? The ones that want us gone or the ones who want us gone? One of the at least two groups who are now battling each other thanks to GWB?

17. I watched it also and thought her best line was the one where she
said that Cindy Sheehan put her son in danger with her actions of protesting the war (or words to that effect). EXCUSE ME! I was under the impression that it was George Bush who was responsible for her son being "in harm's way". The fact that Cindy disagrees with Bush on the war does not endanger anyone's son or daughter.

Carol Phillips has no viewpoint of her own. All she can do is parrot the talking points. This just reinforces my opinion that the people who still support George Bush are the ones who are absolutely terrified at the prospect that they have been supporting a fool and his mission for the past five years.

and yes, that woman was vile! DU had a discussion on this right after the show.

That woman must have taken cues from Ken Mehlman and Karl Rove. All the stupid talking points were there.

That woman was like an annoying little yappy dog growling and baring its teeth. She wouldn't let the other woman get a word in edgewise and made all kinds of stupid remarks.

4. Yes, Carol Phillips really has a chip on her shoulder
I would not have been able to keep quiet as Nancy Lessin did when Carol berated her "shame on you", etc.

During the VietNam war I could never understand how people thought we should stay there so those that died did not die in vain. I don't understand it now and I guess, no matter how old I get, I never will.

11. That's why I don't watch the news too often...
and why I boycott right wing celebs, especially those konfederate kountry "music" pigs. I am the patriot, they are not. I will not be told that I am "unpatriotic".

5. Yes, I did!
And you are so right! Ms. Lessin said how much the military families loved their enlisted family members, sent brownies and care packages, and only wanted them to come home so they could be welcomed home and cared for. Lehrer then asked Ms. Phillips if there was common ground in the feelings noted by Ms. Lesson. Phillips couldn't spit the poison words out fast enough! "Not as far as I'm concerned!"

Disgusting! All Phillips could do was stick to talking points; no original thought happened there! She was tight-lipped and angry and just plain vile and full of hatred just like you said, Blue Belle!

Ms. Lessin, on the other hand, was calm and loving in everything she said about our troops. You can't argue love with hatred, it only makes you look hostile and stupid.

8. Nancy Lessin did a fantastic presentation. Thank you for her

name - I mentioned her on another thread.

The prowar person came off very poorly but I think she was sincere in her feeling that her son (who is in the military) is at risk because antiwar demonstrations give the Iraqi insurgency hope. Sincere or not she was irritating especially when she implied the media is pumping up the antiwar movement.

13. That's an argument that I'll never get behind...
Yes, I can see where the growing lack of support for this war could fuel hope for the insurgents... but really, is that the best argument they can put forth?? Do these people really believe that the insurgents sit around their TV's tracking all the Gallup and CNN polls and trying to figure out the best time to strike?? These people say WE don't have any grasp of how the "enemy" thinks, but I bet you dollars to donuts that if the United States were occupied by a foreign army, they (the NRA lovin', Conservative only with their compassion, Pro-Bush crowd) would be right there with US fighting until the last occupier left our soil. The dropping polls and public dissent aren't fueling the insurgency, our presence on Iraqi soil is... and to preach the mantra of blindly following our leader no matter what... that's not being a good American - it's being a good Nazi. :eyes:

9. Yeah!!
I watched the smug little twit. Any one got a bio on her? She claims to be a VietNam vet. Is that true or is she a VietNam era vet? Or is she nothing? I'd like to know if she ever set foot in VietNam.

10. Here's what sickens me -------------->
The idea that there's "another side" to the Iraq issue.

We've already seen what one side has done. It's been a gigantic fuck-up from the beginning.

Now, it's time for our side, and those who've already had their turn should shut up and listen and learn.

12. Couple of things:
Ms Phillips was a typical right-wing teevee talking head. She was loud and insulting and condescending and equated anyone who wanted to end the war with being a traitor or a terrorist. She was very angry and seemed to hurt her own cause more than help.

Ms Lessin spoke on behave of (+/-) 300,000 anti-war protesters; Ms Phillips was given equal footing when all she represented was 400-odd pro-war Busheviks. It seemed to me that there should have been a much bigger emphasis on the disparate sizes of the two gatherings. Ms Phillips said that her "people" spoke with a loud voice, but Ms. Lessin represents a growing movement that even now is approaching 60% of the populace. "Loud" is all they got.

14. You're correct... loud is all they have...
and to quote Phil Donahue (on Bill O'Reilly last week): "Just because you're loud, doesn't mean you're right."
