Residents living in small, rural Southeast Texas counties were desperate for ice and fuel, said U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, who represents those areas. "Most of these counties have absolutely no power and no fuel, period and it is hotter than blazes," said Brady, who has been traveling the counties since Rita hit.
The number of deaths rose to nine Monday in Texas when the bodies of five people were discovered in a Beaumont apartment, a couple was confirmed dead in Liberty County and a man was electrocuted Sunday in Shelby County.
In addition, 91 firefighters were going to remote locations, distributing fliers that instructed people how to register with the federal agency for help. ----------------------

Ora Manuel, 83, was pronounced dead Sunday at Integris Southwest Medical Center after being removed from life support under the direction of his relatives.
Manuel was one of 102 hurricane evacuees airlifted to Oklahoma City and taken to area hospitals Thursday and Friday, said Tina Wells, a spokeswoman for Emergency Medical Services Authority.
According to McNeil's Funeral home employees, Manuel suffered a heart attack at some point after leaving Port Arthur.
A funeral couldn't be arranged for Manuel because the local funeral home was damaged in the storm, workers for the Mustang funeral home said.
