So when is the prez gonna tell NASCAR to stop?
* tells us we all need to do our part and therefore drive less.

But surely NASCAR, which does precious little more than drive around in big circles whoring corporate names is less important than peoples' ability to get to their low paying, high stress jobs?

1. I've always found
the idea of car racing one of the dumbest concepts for sports I've ever heard.

But that's just me.

3. And all the bafflegab claims that corporations ride big on these things...
(because of all the "advertising".)

yeah, I go to home depot or whereever because it was on NASCAR. :sarcasm: Hell, I only know of NASCAR because of our "culture" and its obsession with it. As I don't watch the idiot box for mainstream programming, I'd otherwise not know about it at all.

But I'm not a big sports fan in general.

19. Welll, HT, you and I don't buy stuff based on NASCAR advertising, but
believe it or not (and I didn't believe it until I saw the data), there are a significant number of companies who do see a return on their advertising dollars spent on NASCAR advertising.

I know it's hard for a rational person to believe (especially given the numbers that such advertising costs), but it's true.

I'm in the marketing business, so it's my job to cut through the bullshit and find out what works and what doesn't. And in many cases, NASCAR sponsorship works.

I wish it wasn't so, but it is.

4. I know people who go and say it lasts for many hours.....
and some times they stop for stuff like the track being wet or too hot..... for an hour or so.
I'd be freaking out.

14. De acuerdo...
What could be more boring than watching a car circle the same track 200 times while Billy Bob next to you gets pissy drunk. No thank you.

2. About when he tells all the people (thousands!) around here
to stop burning God knows how much gasoline every weekend, just to make noise with their boats (every single one of which gets about 1/4 the gas mileage that an SUV does).

And I'm NOT joking about the "thousands" figure, either.

8. I forget what the exact figure is, but...
Something like every squadron of F-15s burns more fuel than 100 Daytona 500 races every hour.

Our consumption of oil is staggeting, when you think about it; I don't even think we can truly comprehend the physical amount we use every day.

15. Well, Mrs R. and I figured out that between the two cars, we use about
twelve gallons a week.

And we don't have any hobbies that focus on burning gasoline, like a boat, or an ATV, or a snowmobile. And she only mows the lawn once a month, whether it needs it or not.

17. I forgot to mention that you raise a damn good point.
I've never been able to find any figures regarding how much fuel bushyboy's Jolly Little War has used to date.

C'mon, DUers; there are a whole bunch of you who are smarter than I am...anyone up to the task of finding out these numbers?

Here's the other one I often use in the "let's piss on the hoi polloi and their oh-so-déclassé amusements" threads:

20. I don't think that "pissing on hoi polloi" (and by the way, it's
"hoi polloi," not "the hoi polloi") was what the OP had in mind.

You assume too much.

21. Well, it seems that we are in the presence of a Greek grammarian!
Edited on Tue Sep-27-05 10:28 PM by QC
Let's see what the fine folks at the American Heritage Dictionary have to say about the matter, shall we?

Since the Greek phrase includes an article, some critics have argued that the phrase the hoi polloi is redundant. But phrases borrowed from other languages are often reanalyzed in English as single words. For example, a number of Arabic noun phrases were borrowed into English as simple nouns. The Arabic element al- means “the,” and appears in English nouns such as alcohol and alchemy. Thus, since no one would consider a phrase such as “the alcohol” to be redundant, criticizing the hoi polloi on similar grounds seems pedantic.

As for assuming too much, well, I'm in good company, since you made the stupendously unwarranted assumption that you had something worthwhile to add to this conversation.

10. So when is the (p)resident going to reign in his own travels?
Not a fan of NASCAR but think GW should stop traveling for photo ops before he asks anyone to stop buying fuel.

There will be plenty of booze to go around, yes?

Let the rest of 'em float around up there playing their harps and admiring one another's halos. We'll be having the real fun.

23. I heard there's no sex in heaven
Not that it's a proposition, just something I heard from a preacher one time.

He didn't actually say there was no sex...but that everyone would be spiritual beings. We'd be too happy to care about not getting any.

Personally, I prefer the sex.

24. Just don't think this is an effective pressure point
I like to race - we use very little fuel in the grand scheme of things. I know it's fun to take another swipe at right-wing NASCAR, but I'm not sure we're gonna gain much support going down this path.

25. Well this has come up before...and I am no NASCAR fan...
But NASCAR uses a special type of gasoline that cannot be used in ordinary street cars. It is my undrstanding that it is refined in a facility well away from the gulf, and they had enough on hand to get through the season even before the hurricanes hit.
