Residents still waiting for electricity, gasoline, water

PORT ARTHUR, Texas (AP) -- Nearly four days after Hurricane Rita hit, many of the storm's sweltering victims along the Texas Gulf Coast were still waiting for electricity, gasoline, water and other relief Tuesday, prompting one top emergency official to complain that people are "living like cavemen."

In the hard-hit refinery towns of Port Arthur and Beaumont, crews struggled to cross debris-clogged streets to deliver generators and water to people stranded by Rita. They predicted it could be a month before power is restored, and said water and sewer systems could not function until more generators arrived.

Red tape was also blamed for the delays. (See video on grim situation on Gulf Coast -- 6:12)

It must be the victims' fault again. Those damn victims. Republicans are sick and tired of the victim's victim mentality. Why don't they drain the water, rebuild, and quit begging for necessities.

Oh no way. The whole damn Mississippi Coast (minus the places without any structures left) was restored in two weeks from a more devestating hurricane. Even the rural areas had power in two weeks.

Who said they were better prepared for Rita? They're handing out generators when they power should be back on.

8. A month? Likely a deliberate overestimate.

First, I will immediately grant that I am guess from a distance, and may be way wrong. I am going on prior experience from being in hurricane damaged areas.

Every time they said it would be a month, and each time it was about a week for me, and and two weeks for everybody. I had the good luck to be close to a main line and so was fixed early.

I think with Rita that they are doing the same type thing. At least I hope they are.
