I wish Geena Davis was President.
I actually got a little choked up watching a President on TV that I could be proud of.

Then the tears really started flowing when I reminded myself it was only a T.V. show, and we were still being governed by a madman.

I'd give anything to believe in our nation's leaders again.

1. I doubt you're alone in that wish
Maybe this show can work on folks so that wish can come true next election (and getting rid of Diebold, of course).

3. That would be great.
Forgive me for not knowing this, but what did happen to the actual woman who was sentenced to death for having sex? I know she was on death row while her infant breastfed. I never heard anything further.

5. They extracted her and her baby
simultanously with the presidents speech (which she gave without a teleprompter).

I didn't expect to like this show as much as I did. Just liked seeing a woman in charge!

9. Oh, yes, I saw that. I mean the REAL woman. This was an actual case.
They based the show on an actual event. There was a woman on death row in Africa, sentenced to be executed by stoning for having sex.

4. She's an actress playing a role.
Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 12:19 AM by Carolab
On edit, in "real life", she's a Republican supporter.

6. Um, not so sure about that.
And I apologize for posting this without a link, but it's been a couple of weeks -- there was a thread about the political leanings of the Hollywoods, and I believe Geena is a Dem. If anyone knows the link that showed where the Hollywoods stand, can you post?

8. She's a Democrat.
Has said so in interviews concerning this show. Apparently everyone in the cast is a Democrat. And of course Donald Sutherland is an old leftie, which is to say a former New Leftie.

11. Geena Davis is a Democrat
I remember seeing something along those lines back during the elections '04. I couldn't find links to any '04 article but I knew I'd also seen a couple of interviews with her recently about the show, including this one:
http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2005-09-22-commander-premiere_x.htm
which lists her as a Dem playing an Ind in the show.

And, yes, she'd have my vote!!!

12. She was standing on a stage not long ago with Bushes & Cheneys.
I can't remember the function but it was some kind of salute to the troops. There is a photo of her there.

As a Dem, I couldn't stomach standing on the same stage with them.

30. Also doesn't hurt that she is Mensa qualified

and a damn good archer as well (was trying to make the US Olympic
Archery team at one point).

And yeah, she is a Dem.

I simply meant that it would be nice to have an effective intelligent president.

looks like we have another show to watch other than West Wing to remind us how a SUCCESSFUL White House handles the stuff we're really dealing with as a nation.:P

34. CNN had an interview with Davis where she said at the current rate
we are electing women, we will reach parity in 500 years. Also, she said that in terms of world political leadership, ranking how many women are elected, the US is 67th!! We have a long way to go in a country that is supposed to be a leader in women's rights.

19. Very nicely spoken, Vektor.
And that's no surprise given the source. You make solid sense as usual and offer us a broader, essential point.

I also saw this program and enjoyed it very much, feeling it was ahead of the pace of most Americans' perceptions of power generally and gender power particularly.

'Have always loved your posts, and this one's no exception. Thank you.

I hope COMMANDER IN CHIEF has a long life on the screen.

21. HI!!
Haven't seen you in a while. Thanks for he kind words. You never know - Many Americans pay more attention to television shows than they do real life. They ignore the war in Iraq but faithfully watch every episode of American Idol. Maybe this is the way to get America thinking outside the box for once. Whatever works! I hope the show is a success. I enjoyed it.

33. I was impressed last night. Thanks to the writers also for
making Geena a tough character with actual leadership skills. And the plot twist at the beginning was interesting, added real life appeal (the president asking her to resign).

Now I just hope this show doesn't become a "lifetime" movie where the women are always victims. The beginning is so promising.

38. I had to quit halfway through....too many commercials
Not all of us have Tivo but it seems that the
new shows or seasons have decided that we do
and can sell even more commercial space.
I didn't do an exact count, but it was enough
to give up on what looks like a promising show.
