Suffolk OKs bill of health

Lawmakers approve proposal to require non-unionized stores to kick in health care costs for employees

Suffolk lawmakers overwhelmingly passed a bill yesterday that requires large non-unionized grocery retailers to set aside money to pay for their employees' health-care costs.

The measure, sponsored by Legis. William Lindsay (D-Holbrook), passed 17-1, with more than enough votes to override a veto if Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy chooses not to support it.

"It's great. It's wonderful. We applaud the legislators for their bipartisan cooperation," said Kris LaGrange, a spokesman for the Long Island Federation of Labor, representing 250,000 union members, including those working in the grocery industry.

The measure requires companies to allocate at least $3 for every hour an employee worked and the money would go to pay employees' health care costs.

4. WalMart Profits from death of employees! WA House Bill 1033

A measure aimed at curbing the corporate use of "Dead Peasants Insurance" can be found in House Bill 1033. This insurance milks for profit the eventual deaths of the average people who work for a companies.

As it stands now, companies that are engaged in this practice (Wal Mart and others) purchase life-insurance policies (at reduced rates because they buy so many) on rank-and-file employees WITHOUT telling the employees! This is NOT a part of the employees "benefits" package and is done completely without their knowledge.

It is my understanding (directly from one of our legislators) that the "proceeds" are then used to feather the corporate executive bonus packages!

Likely the reason why there are so many "older" employees at WalMart.
