MUST READ: My class's phone call to Rep. Connie Machs

A couple days ago I mentioned a that my social studies class is studying bias and to do so watching Fahrenheit 9/11 and Celsius 41.11.

So today we are sitting in class watching Fahrenheit 9/11. The point comes up where Michael Moore interviews Porter Goss over the patriot act, and Porter mentions he has a 800 number to call him. Mr. Moore puts a little subtitle under the picture and mentions that it isn't true and gives Porter's private office number.

We have a guy by the name of Tyler in our class, he decides to pull out of cell phone and starts to call the number. Our teacher says to him "Hey! No cell phones in school!" and Tyler replies "I want to call Porter Goss!" Then our teacher picks up his phone and starts dialing while saying "In that case, you can use mine." Our teacher also put the thing over the PA speaker in our room so all of us could hear it. Tyler is getting nervous by now and mentions, "No, it's okay," to which our teacher responds "Too late it's ringing."

A woman answers the phone, and Tyler asks to talk to the congressman. The person who I assume is the secretary says that she is in a meeting, then asks who is calling. Tyler stumbles and mutters for a few seconds and then the secretary says "I hear Fahrenheit 9/11 in the background. Are you enjoying the movie?" I was completely shocked at that remark. Our teacher mentions something along the effect of "I guess we aren't the first ones to call the wrong number," and we all laugh. The secretary asks what we are studying, and our teacher mentions how we are studying bias. Then he tells Tyler "You better be careful with your paper, or some men in black suits just may visit you in the middle of the night!" Just about everyone but Tyler laughs at that remark, I think he was a bit intimidated the way our teacher said it. Then our teacher ends the call.

It only took 2-3 minutes, and it doesn't sound nearly as funny as it really was. That is gotta be the best phone call I've heard.
