Help Harry Reid Fight the Oil Tycoons!
Dear Friend,

Recently, a lobbyist from the American Petroleum Institute (the lobbying arm of big oil) was overheard at a bar saying, "we're the richest trade association in town." That comment sums up their response to record gas prices before and following Hurricane Katrina. As gas prices shoot up, they're counting their money and buying drinks for their friends.

Not coincidentally, while families pay those record prices, oil companies' profits have shot up. According to an Oil Daily report before Katrina hit, the ten major oil companies are on pace to post an astounding $100 billion plus in profits in 2005. I'm all for American businesses doing well, but we must make sure these record profits aren't reaped at the expense of America's families.

Last week the Senate Democratic Policy Committee called the CEOs of big oil to answer questions about their record profits on the backs of Hurricane Katrina. Of course they refused to show up. If they won't answer Congress' questions maybe they'll answer their customers' questions.

Join me to ask the CEOs of big oil: Why in the face of national tragedy are Americans paying 50% more at the pump than they did one year ago, while you reap record profits?

Ask the CEOs yourself by visiting:

Oil companies aren't the only ones at fault for the record high gas prices. During debate on the Energy Bill in July, Republicans brushed aside our efforts to help consumers, and instead gave oil companies billions of dollars more.

Oil companies and Republicans have chosen not to help America's families, Democrats will. Unlike Republicans in Congress, we have real plans and won't overlook skyrocketing gas prices. We have a commitment to oversight, and we have a long-term vision for energy independence by the year 2020.

In order to help grassroots Democrats begin advocating that vision, I have launched a new site: GiveEmHellHarry.com. Think of this site as your own. A place where you can be a part of taking back your Senate in 2006 and fight to provide everyone with good health care; make America energy independent; restore America's global strength; secure our retirement and rebuild our economy through innovation and reform. Working together, we can accomplish these goals.

Visit GiveEmHellHarry.com right now and ask energy CEOs about high gas prices:

We know America can do better than watching families fall victim to the endless cycle of rising gas prices. We are all tired of non-answers and no accountability. And we can't keep paying record prices without jeopardizing our family's future.

We can and must change that future.

Thank you,

Harry Reid

2. Here's my message to big oil companies
To my knowledge, although you were invited to attend no representatives were sent from your companies. I was watching the testimony and the fact that you didn't even bother to attend really offended me as an American. I don't understand why you would not participate. Are you too busy counting the record profits you are making right now? Seriously. They are record profits too and we both know it. So, why is it during this difficult time here we, the average Americans, are paying 50% more at the pump these days? Why is the price so high right now? The way I understand it, there is no justification for these arbitrary prices that you are charging us. I think that you all should be ashamed of yourselves. Furthermore, I think when anyone in Congress invites you to testify...the least you could do is show up.
