Have you seen Conyers letter to Rove?
I thought this was a remarkable letter. Is somebody pissed? Way to go John!

Conyers Calls For Rove's Resignation
http://www.truthout.org/docs_03/100803A.shtml

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative John Conyers, Jr., the Ranking Member, on the House Judiciary Committee sent the following letter to Senior White House Advisor, Karl Rove, asking for his resignation:

    Tuesday 07 October 2003

    Dear Mr. Rove:

I write to ask you to resign from the White House staff. Recent press reports have indicated that, while you may or may not have been the source of the Robert Novak column which revealed the status and name of a covert operative, the wife of Ambassador Joseph Wilson, you were involved in a subsequent effort to push this classified information to other reporters and give it even wider currency. This itself may be a federal crime, but regardless of that fact, your actions are morally indefensible. In my view, it is shameful and unethical that an Administration that promised to govern with "honor and integrity" and "change the tone" in Washington has now engaged in an orchestrated campaign to smear and intimidate truth-telling critics, placing them in possible physical harm and impairing the efforts and operations of the CIA.

Recent reports indicate that you told the journalist, Chris Matthews, and perhaps others, that Mr. Wilson's wife and her undercover status were "fair game." Evan Thomas and Michael Isikoff, Newsweek, Oct. 13, 2003. Since these initial allegations have arisen, neither the White House nor your office have denied your involvement in furthering the leak. Repeated press inquiries into this matter have been rebuffed with technical jargon and narrow legalisms, instead of broader ethical issues. Indeed, in the same article it appears a White House source acknowledged that you contacted Matthews and other journalists, indicating that "it was reasonable to discuss who sent Wilson to Niger."

It should be noted that these actions may well have violated 18 U.S.C. ¤ 793, which prohibits the willful or grossly negligent distribution of national defense information that could possibly be used against the United States. The law states that even if you lawfully knew of Mr. Wilson's wife's status, you were obliged to come forward and report the press leak to the proper authorities - not inflame the situation by encouraging further dissemination. 18 U.S.C. ¤ 793(f). Larger than whether any one statute can be read to find criminal responsibility is the issue of whether officials of your stature will be allowed to use their influence to intimidate whistle-blowers.

Over three decades ago, our nation was scarred by an Administration that would stop at nothing to smear and intimidate its critics. I do not believe the Nation will countenance a repeat of such activities. For your role in this campaign, I would ask that you resign immediately.

    Sincerely,
    John Conyers, Jr.
    Ranking Minority Member
    cc: The Honorable F. James

Sensenbrenner, Jr.
    Chairman
    Committee on the Judiciary

6. not only
do some people care, but there are very pissed off people, from people like Conyers, to the CIA, to people like us.
Whatever else happens, this and the Iraq lies won't be forgotten. They can't screw people, including the military, and the CIA without creating problems for themselves.

4. Also signed by James Sensenbrenner
who drove many people around the bend during the impeachment proceedings.

He's completely Republican. It's really good to see someone as right-winged as he on board with John Conyers in this.

John Conyers is WONDERFUL. Hope he's around for a long, long time.

7. I love Conyers
I'm actually going to see his daughter this weekend at my 20th high school reunion. She and I both graduated from high school in 1983. I can't wait to tell her how much I admire her father's courage.

8. Why the noble congressman mentioned it tonight at the church
where I met DK. I wish I could have met Conyers as well, I really admire him, the MC refered to him as the dean of the black cancus. Indeed Conyers is.

12. Did you say
DK mentioned Conyers letter?
This letter needs some circulation. It states very precisely why Rove should resign and may even be eligable for jail time.

11. Rep Conyers is a great and principled man
You could see and feel that during his speech at the Black Caucus convention. He is an American patriot and I admire his tenacity.

His letter will not be the last!

16. Conyers and Sheila Jackson Lee and Kendrick Meek
gave speeches (to an otherwise empty House) tonight from about 11 to 11:40 p.m. last night (Tues). They were all ELOQUENT in denouncing the White House and its lying war-mongering. If anyone saves America from itself it will be the Black Caucus and people like these. Lee said we were facing a Constitutional crisis. They are dead serious, and we do need to stand firmly with them, and let them know we're there. (After this stupid CA election, I don't suppose even they can be sure the people are with them in the fight unless we let them know.)

Thanks for posting the letter! Does anyone know how to get transcripts of the Congressional record? I've gotten lost the few times I've tried--though that was when I've looked for texts from Congressional hearings, and I'm not sure where (or if) those are made available....

21. Yeah--they are the leaders we need to recognize, but
when it was between between Maynard Jackson and Terry McAuliffe, we got McA. The worst point (IMO) was when the House Black Caucus couldn't get a single senator to stand with them in protesting vote fraud in FL in 2000. Publicly, they are perfectly civil to their colleagues, but I wonder what they really think. I suppose the failure to back them up was explained away as strategy--but look where that kind of "cleverness" has gotten us....

Anyway, the Black Caucus (with a shifting list of allies among the rest of the Dems--depending on the issue) is taking all the chances, saying clearly what needs to be said on every critical issue. I just pray they don't get left hanging out to dry (like McKinney).
