DREIER Was "too moderate" (Repuke Code Words)
Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 09:05 AM by UTUSN
Plus BLUNT as EVEN WORSE than DELAY. And it was funny how Don sL-IMUS could only spend 1 to 2 minutes on the DELAY indictment, while hosting TRUMP for endless segments and letting Orrin "Shirley TEMPLE" HATCH yap without taking a breath for 10 to 15 minutes. Funny also that Orrin had NOT a word to say about his fellow member of Congress and member of party's having been INDICTED.

.... There was one big problem: When DeLay's indictment was unsealed yesterday, conservatives in the GOP caucus immediately erupted in anger over rumors that the selection of Dreier, whom they regard as too moderate, was being presented as a fait accompli. ....

As majority whip, Blunt, even more than DeLay before him, has created a formal alliance with K Street lobbyists, empowering corporate representatives and trade association executives to assist the House leadership in counting votes and negotiating amendments to bring holdouts into the fold.

Last year, when the House leadership faced apparently insurmountable odds in passing legislation eliminating a $50 billion export tax break, the lobbying community stepped in to add billions of new tax breaks for major corporations with facilities in nearly every district -- General Electric, Boeing, Caterpillar, United Technologies, Honeywell and Emerson. The support built up majority backing for the measure.

Special-interest intervention
Blunt's best-known special-interest intervention was a 2003 late-night attempt -- unsuccessful, as it turned out -- to add an amendment sought by Philip Morris. Blunt's son then was a lobbyist for Philip Morris in Missouri; Blunt himself was dating a Philip Morris lobbyist whom he later married, and he had received more than $150,000 in contributions from the company and subsidiaries. ....

5. Too moderate = Likes to have sex with men
C'mon gay Republicans, wake up!

Your party doesn't even want you!

Drier has hit the "glass ceiling". He ain't going nowhere but down.

7. "Too moderate"
Right, so the Republican establishment believes that you can't have anyone in a leadership position who is "too moderate." They want fire-breathing conservatives who attack Democrats for fun before breakfast.

Meanwhile, the Democratic establishment (along with the DLC apologists who pop up on this board every time and only when someone disses the DLC) believes that you can't have anyone in a leadership position who is "too liberal." They want wussy moderates who kiss several Republican asses before breakfast.

Sigh!

8. Why isn't the media covering real reason Dreier wasn't chosen
Will the Main Stream Media Report that Dreier was Blocked Because He is GAY?

Will the Main Stream Media Report that Dreier was Blocked Because He is GAY?

I have just done a quick search at News.Google.com just to see what media outlets in the Google roster have posted anything about David Dreier being knocked out of contention for the House Majority Leader position like a pre-ordained, gay-leaning priest trying to get into Pope Benedict XVI's Catholic Church.

I just searched under "Dreier" and "homosexual" and three citations came up -- all blogs. I'm sure that there will be at least some mention in the main stream press, but thus far these blogs at AlterNet.org, RedState.org (be warned -- this link is tough to find even after registering), and OutsideTheBeltway.org are the only ones up. Many other bloggers are on this as well -- particularly at RawStory.

However, if the Republican-Majority-Leader-to-be was preempted because he was gay, that is real news. I haven't heard the commentary yet, but several people have reported to me that CNN's Wolf Blitzer stated that Dreier was blocked at the last moment because he was pro-choice, from Southern California, and had "other issues" -- the last part stated in a low and halting voice.

If true, what is that about, Wolf? If Dreier -- who is one of the most powerful and, frankly, capable members of House Republican leadership -- Chairman of the powerful Rules Committee -- was stopped from stepping into the indicted Tom DeLay's seat because he was gay -- can we finally get beyond the blogs and onto the pages of the New York Times and Washington Post about this real news?

9. Because that isn't the ONLY reason & probably isn't the main one.
Check out the topic at http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4923312 . I have no doubt that Dreier being gay was one factor, but this was also about power politics and about bad blood between Blunt and DeLay, from years back, due to something DeLay supporters did to Blunt (presumably following directions from DeLay).

11. Covers the Same Territory
It was probably as useful to DREIER to be shunted aside, since the scrutiny would be heightened.

As for the power playing: Sure, the knifers BLUNT and DELAY are playing for keeps and have the alley HUNGER for it. It takes a thief, it takes a slasher, it takes a (fill in the blank) ---to get rid of another one.

13. The point is that even if Dreier WASN'T gay you'd've still had this result
Blunt had too much power, and too many reasons to want to get even with DeLay, to allow himself to be pushed aside in favor of ANYONE that DeLay might have handpicked as a purely-temporary successor with no ambitions to keep the job.

15. We're Saying the Same Things
And in the original post, while the headline highlighted the DREIER/Gay aspect, three of the four excerpted paragraphs dealt with BLUNT.

14. It was because the GOP couldn't handle the scandal
of ANOTHER top dog in the leadership! It's not about Drieir being gay, per se...but that he'd be forced out of the closet in a very public way is just one more scandal on top of the huge steaming pile.

Blunt was put in because they can use him as a puppet. He's just the latest front man for operations while they continue their crimes behind the scenes.
