Hurr Rita: Master Thread - Feds Poor Response AGAIN!
I'm starting a master thread for all future posts and prior threads related to, once again, the Federal Govt's/BushCo Admin's piss poor response to the aftermath of Hurricane Rita. All of us here in Houston/SE Texas are sick and damn tired of the BushCo spin and photo-ops on this disaster.

I'm also interested in under-reporting as to the damage and death's from Hurricane Rita. I'm seeing a lot of it currently by the National media. Many devastated areas, in East Texas and Western Louisiana are not being properly reported by the media. Death's from Hurricane Rita are not being properly reported either. Also the significant damage to the Gulf Coast Oil & Gas infrastructure is being under-reported for some unknown reason. Thanks, GOPA

---------------
PS: This will probably be my last post at DU for the time being. I only post here when situations require, with the last time being the Kerry/Edwards Prez bid (I/we like John Edwards very much, and I personally like John Kerry). Frankly, I loath politics, and have my hands full running our Hurricane Rita Operations here in Houston.

Further, I/we are missing a friend from the hurricane and are now very worried. She lives in a small town outside Beaumont, Texas (that was hit very hard by Hurr Rita) and has not reported in since the hurricane. It's very unlike her. We talked with the local sheriff this morning, and are in the process of heading out to get into the restricted area and her home.

1. Hurr Rita: 107 Texas Deaths
Lessons come at high cost: 107 lives
By CINDY HORSWELL and EDWARD HEGSTROM
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

A 2-year-old Houston girl crushed beneath the wheels of a pickup; a Sugar Land man and his two young children fatally pitched from their overturning car near Madisonville; a 92-year-old La Marque woman dead after losing consciousness while stuck in highway gridlock — Hurricane Rita's tales of sorrow rolled in as the death toll climbed.

A Chronicle survey of Houston-area counties and those along major evacuation routes to the north and west indicates that at least 107 people were killed by last week's hurricane or died in accidents or from health problems associated with the evacuation of 2.5 million people from their homes.

2. Thanks GOP
These are very good links for reading when I have more time and electricity! And yes, the FEMA response has been awful- deliberately so of course. The locals have been working day and night to get the area back on its feet. Please don't believe anything else, no matter what you all hear in the national media. :)

5. Poll: 71% Approved Bush's Handling of Rita - WTF!
Bush Approval Rating Rises After Hurricane Rita, Survey Shows

Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President George W. Bush's job approval rating rose from a career low after he took a more visible role in the government response to Hurricane Rita than he did for Hurricane Katrina, a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll showed.

Public approval of the job Bush is doing increased to 45 percent in the poll conducted Sept. 26-28, up from 40 percent in a Sept. 16-18 poll. Bush's job-approval peaked at 90 percent in the weeks after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks four years ago and his rating is down from a high this year of 57 percent in the days after his Feb. 2 State of the Union speech, the poll showed.

As Rita hit the Texas-Louisiana border Sept. 24, Bush monitored federal, state and local preparations from U.S. Northern Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He made a trip to the region for talks with local authorities on Sept. 27, making stops in the two states.

The survey showed 40 percent of respondents approved of the way Bush did his job responding to Katrina, while 71 percent approved of the way he handled Rita.

At Hearings, States and National Guard Make Appeals for Aid
By SCOTT SHANE
Published: September 29, 2005

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 - The National Guard has only a third of the equipment it needs to respond to domestic disasters and terrorist attacks and will need $7 billion to acquire the radios, trucks, construction machinery and medical gear required, the Guard's top commander told a Congressional committee on Wednesday.

8. EVACUATION "like a horror movie" (Rita evacuees denied help)
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1816637

DALLAS - Alex LeBlanc left Beaumont on Thursday to begin a 50-hour bus trip across East Texas. What he experienced, he said, was "like a horror movie."
...
LeBlanc was one of about 3,000 evacuees who fled Hurricane Rita aboard a convoy of about 50 Beaumont Independent School District school buses. The drivers originally were scheduled to pull into Lufkin, but were prevented from stopping there. That pattern continued until they reached Canton, about 250 miles from Beaumont, at about daybreak Saturday.
...
As they sat outside on folding chairs, having a smoke, they described seeing people on their front lawns glaring at them with shotguns in hand, and pickup trucks with nooses hanging in back (most of the bus passengers were black). The drivers said whenever they tried to stop to rest or let their passengers use the restroom, town officials had court orders waiting for them to get out of town, an assertion those town officials later denied.

They are supposed to testify at the congressional hearing and apparently - they are not happy that the people are all still housed in trailers in a sort of camp and there's a lot of violence going on. They are concerned that they are being ignored because of Katrina and Rita.

131. Tx, La. officials give FEMA mixed reviews(Still don't know who's at fault)
Edited on Sun Oct-02-05 01:03 AM by preciousdove
Frustration, praise voiced over response
By Maria Sacchetti, Globe Staff | October 1, 2005
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2005/10/01/texas_la_officials_give_fema_mixed_reviews/

...First, hospital patients were airlifted out of Beaumont hours later than they expected, and by then some patients were weak and vomiting at the airport, said Judge Carl Griffith of Jefferson County, which encompasses the city....

Several government officials in southeastern Texas said the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other government agencies must work faster during disasters like this one. Many complained that many requests for aid were mired in paperwork, with the sought-after supplies coming in fits and starts or not at all.

Griffith, the chief elected official in Jefferson County, called this week for a presidential commission to investigate the emergency responses of federal, state, and local agencies, and investigate how to improve their performance in the future. He recommended that FEMA be elevated to a Cabinet department whose secretary would have direct access to the president....

''To point the finger at FEMA is not fair," said Mayor Glenn Johnson of Port Neches. ''We don't know where the breakdown is."...
