I am concerned that the GOP will be lavishing bounty on California to get Bush's fortune turned around as fast as possible in time for Election 2004. I fear that my own state of NY will be sacrificed, as will much of the NE, to make this possible, because the Iraq bill isn't about to go down and they're going to have to get the money for their bribe somewhere. But the GOP doesn't care how much of a deficit it builds up to accomplish its political goals, because either way they win--either the WH in 2004 or freedom from the consequences of their irresponsibility if things continue to go horribly wrong for Bush.
But that's just the thing. Arnold is now extremely vulnerable to attack on his "morals." While I'm expecting the media to get all Maureen Dowdy on Arnold's ass for the next several months, and for the GOP to pull out all the stops to propagandize attacks on Arnold as "silly" or "hypocritical" coming from BJ Klintoon's party, some of these victims may actually be more than willing to draw blood. And the Republicans have made it easier for a chief executive to get sued in office. Dems would be fools not to take advatage of the Hummer-wide hole Reps opened up for them. When you get right down to it, a guy who was once stupid enough to think immediately of Hitler as someone he admired (whether or not it was only for his "public speaking" abilities) is a loose cannon. Does the GOP really know what they've gotten themselves into with him? They may think he's just a piece of putty, but is he? Is Arnold another Reagan who knows where to hit his mark and say what they want him to say? Or is he a little Hitler in waiting? Do they really know who he is?
A lot of the outcome of the next year will depend on the willingness of Democrats to keep their talons out and be prepared to use them. Dems in Congress would need to be aware of where the money goes and be ready to scream when they smell something fishy pass under their noses. Dems in California are going to have to have the energy to stay on top of Arnold and keep it very uncomfortable for him, to use every advantage they have to keep him weak.
As I say, it's unlikely, but possible, that Arnold's term will be miserable for him. Let's just hope it's not too miserable for Californians who didn't vote for his sorry Nazi-loving ass.
