The John Roberts 'NO' Vote Appreciation Thread

They were told that voting against the Roberts his nomination would be pointless, that he was a brilliant figure who would - and should - be confirmed easily.

They wanted more, though. They wanted to protect our nation's women - and Constitution - from the sleaze of the 'religious' right. They wanted to protect our basic right.

They wanted to protect America.

Many of them voted against the Iraq War; others didn't. Some are considered 2008 presidential candidates; some have run in the past. Some are more popular on DU and the progressive community than others. Some are in their first term; others have served for decades; a few will be retiring soon.

It's easy to go off on those Senators who betrayed us; one represents my state. This thread, however, is dedicated to these 22 men and women who cut through the BS and voted NO.

If one of your Senators (or both!) are on this list, I encourage you to contact them letting them know that you're proud of them.

2. Harkin of IA is still MY senator altho I've been back in OK 15 years

I remember when Harkin first ran for congress in 72.....he lost and his wife was elected the district atty of Story County IA......she was the 1st woman DA in IA history.......Story Co dems used to kid Tom a lot b/c she was the 1st in the family to be elected

Harkin won in 74 when democrats swept the off-year election

8. when Grassley 1st ran, he wasn't too bad....Culver (D) of course better

I lived in IA when Grassley was first elected (1980)......his thing was DOD paying 1000s of $$ for items you could get much cheaper on the open market

he ran against the dem John Culver....2 things I remember about that race

....in a grocery store cafe I overheard some retired farmers talking....they said Culver's hair looked blow-dried; they wouldn't vote for someone who spent so much time on his hair

....I was watching a TV debate between Culver and Grassley; later my now ex who heard parts of the debate from another room said Grassley would win b/c 'he sounds like Will Rogers'

maybe no dem could win in IA in 1980.....Reagan swamped the state; the legislature had previously passed an ERA amendment, adding to the numbers needed for an amendment to the constitution......between that time and the 1980 vote the RW organized a massive antiERA movement.....in our town the anti-group was the front for a massive antiERA Mormon assault

the 1980 election was sickening...I walked the precinct to get out the democratic vote KNOWING that most of my democratic neighbors were voting against the ERA and for Reagan

9. I appreciate every one of them. Why is it so hard for so many...

Democratic politicians to have a spine? Also, why is it that, when Democratic politicians oppose something, they're being obstructionists, but when Republican politicians do the same thing, they're "voting their consciences."

I wish that I could shake each of their hands and tell them personally how much I appreciate their action.

Oh and thanks to the entire MA delegation that voted to uphold the Endangered Species Act in the House by voting no to Pombo's bill to kill the ESA. (Entire Congressional Delegation from MA also voted against CAFTA and the Bankruptcy Bill. You guys can really Rock sometimes. Even Lynchie!))
