I ask this because this whole Miller deal has me a bit wrapped around the axle, so to speak. Like most of you I was really outraged by the baseless and loosely sourced articles cheerleader Milled published in the Times that supported the administrations lies for war. I was furious when I learned the details about many of those articles and somehow felt a sense of satisfaction that she was being held accountable for those unprofessional and immoral transgressions.

On the other hand, I have a real problem with the notion that the "government" can compel me to state under oath what I may or may not know about a particular situation. That they can compel me to reveal private information that would not be available to them through traditional investigational techniques. In other words, they can force me to rat out my colleagues, friends, and acquaintances. My rights to privacy be damned and if I try to assert them, it is time in the pokey.

So, yes Judy is a shill and deserved some comeuppance, no doubt. But having been in shoes very similar to hers (albeit a much shorter time at the "country club") I can state that her tenacity leads me to derive several conclusions:

a) She tolerated that hell out of "principal" and if that is true, she has earned my respect in spite of the fact that I really don't like her.

b) She is involved in something so devious that to testify would have much more profound and personally devastating effects in which case I am amazed that she agreed to testify at all.

c) There is some lack of emotional balance within giving her personal messages of great fame and respect (eg martyrdom) if she holds true to this path.

Whatever the reason, bottom line this lady has now spent time (almost 3 months) in some of the worst imaginable circumstances. Unless you have ever experienced such powerlessness, I doubt you can comprehend just how far someone is willing to go just to "make it end". If all it takes to go "home", is to tell what you know, why would you not do that? Principal?, Fear?, Ego?. I am sorry she has had to endure such circumstances. But I also know she will have a very different perspective and attitude toward life and freedom in general once she is back in the "world".

That fact that she has held out for this long is amazing, but the reason for such a commitment will certainly be the real story.

I spent many years in prison. I slept through the first year, it had no impression upon me and certainly did not open my eyes to the truth about my life and what had happened. That took time.

So, first off, I don't agree that three months in a country club comes close to the 'worst imaginable circumstances'.

My other thought is, doesn't she have to deal with the effect on her career if she breaks confidentiality to save her own skin? I would think this would be a very strong motivation.

Finally, in my case I was incarcerated because of something I had done. That realization, when it finally impinged upon me, was the most painful part. Accepting and understanding that my behavior had been so bad that normal people needed to lock me in a cage to protect themselves. That was difficult.
She doesn't have to deal with that at all because she is not locked up because of anything wrong she did. She has no emotional and spiritual turmoil to go through. She simply needs to wait until the wheels turn and she is free again.

So, I disagree with the basis of your contentions.

3. I can't dig up any respect for her chutzpa in this regard

because I don't believe her obstinance was based on personal conviction and principal. I believe she felt the 'mob' would reward her richly for her loyalty.
What do I have thats concrete to base this feeling on? I base it on absolutely nothing aside from the integrity that is missing in most of here stenographic reporting prior to the war. It's just my take on it all at this point.
If it turns out she was protecting our 1st amendment rights from certain death and satan I will rush to apologize.
