Did you hear him? Did you catch it? It was really funny. "Keep your knees loose" I heard that phrase here at DU first a few weeks back there was a thread about it when KO first started saying "good night and good luck." (I can't wait to see that movie 10/07/05)

5. It's from Jean Shepherd

the same humorist most famous now for having written the short stories that the movie "A Christmas Story" was based on. He used it as a signoff on his radio show. To quote one Web site that explains it:

**"AND REMEMBER, KIDDIES, keep your knees loose and your glove well oiled." With that phrase Jean Shepherd - New York radio raconteur, midwestern baseball nut and absurd guru to legions of misfit nightowls - would sign off in the wee hours of the morning. It took a while before the deeper meaning of that bit of baseball wisdom became apparent. Knees loose: aha! flexible, ready to move in any direction. Glove well oiled: yes, ready to catch the ball, to catch anything life throws your way.**

Given that Olbermann is such an admirer of Edward R. Murrow, and such a fan of baseball, it's a perfect signoff for him.

edited to add: I think he's been saying "good night and good luck" since the show started, but "Keep your knees loose" is an addition from earlier this year.

I remember my insane joy at stumbling onto an old Jean Shepherd broadcast at 2-3am or so a few years ago... "Holy shit! its the Christmas Story guy!" - my friend and I were totally mesmerized, unable to switch it off until he finished his story. Incredible storyteller, what a way with words...

got me googling frantically the next day, trying to download as much as possible. A great show to go to sleep to.
