1. At least one number is an understimation
Estimated number of insurgents in Iraq (June 2005):
15 - 20,000

Let's she we have 139,000 / 0.857 = 162,194 troops and they cannot control (at most) 20,000 people according to their own estimation.

So that is 8 hi-tech soldiers with the most sophisticated weapons for 1 ordinary citizen with a 10-year AK47. And they are losing the battle.

Something tells me that the numbers aren't correct...

4. strange
I didn't put two and two together when I read it, but now that you point it out it doesn't seem quite right. Unless they are counting medical evacuations for psychological problems. But still...

7. Vehicle accidents, psychological disorders, self-inflicted injuries, etc.
Vehicle accidents, psychological disorders, self-inflicted injuries, etc. do not count as "wounded" or killed in action.

5. actually 8 to 1 is a very low ratio to try to control insurgents
Most military planners will tell you that unless the ratio is 10 to 1 or greater, don't bother as you will eventually lose.

6. Assymetrical warfare
You can't put one soldier out there. It takes 8 to cover each other's backs, drive the Humvee, navigate, interpret, etc. One insurgent can walk or drive or bicycle or motorbike anywhere. Insurgents use explosives as much or more than AK47s.
