is a championship chess match. Can Judith tell just enough of the truth to satisfy the terms of her agreement? Can her training in spewing disinformation help her? Does Fitzgerald have information to catch her in areas besides her conversations with Libby?

One thing is obvious: her agreement to testify has little to do with Libby "releasing" her. There is something else, much larger, going on.

to record all of her conversations with visiotrs and on the phone while she was in jail. The only exception would have been with her attorneys.

It's legal and it's used all the time.

If he did that, then he has her and Bolton's conversation on tape.

raised that (very interesting) possibility. I think Fitzgerald has everything he needs. I think we are in business now; I keep thinking back to something you posted about a month ago, regarding how even when Bush's popularity ratings were really high, people on the democratic left had a consistent message, and now the general population is picking up on it. The depth of this administration's betrayal of this country is starting to come into sharp focus. The Plame case is one of the most important parts of that.

Libby had to hold off until

1) He had a get out of jail free card waiting for him. By the time any proceeding takes its course, he will be looking at a maximum of one year before his pardon comes.
2) The WH staffers and admin had all gotten the story sufficiently straight so as to blame Judith Miller, or even Bill Clinton
3) The new SCJ was successfully through Congress so he could interfere in the process from behind the scenes

Too many possibilities, but none of them lending themselves to a successful prosecution. Remember who we are talking about.

7. ever spend any time in prison?

even with daily visitors, rather comfortable surroundings and digs, a fellow lawyer friend told me in detail what happens to your typical inmate. There are several well-defined stages.

Initially, people have bluster/fear/a sense of wonder. This lasts the first day.
Then, the reality begins to dawn and by day three people undergo major depressions. (lifers and experienced prison dwellers talk about this as the make or break time)
About a week or two into the process, the senses become deadened and your will to survive weakens. The highest rate of suicide occur on the first night and about the middle of week two. Well defined spikes which seasoned prison guards look for.
By a month into the process, your memories and activities are pretty well-ingrained into prison practices and procedures. About 7 weeks, there is another dip, as the prisoner realizes just how well ingrained those procedures have become into their psyche, and other bout of minor depression occurs.

She was there for 9 weeks. It is not fun. It is not games. It may not have been lifer solitary, but she truly felt the impact.

10. A Soft Life

Yeah, I agree.

Judith Miller has had a pretty soft life ... she probably enjoyed being a martyr for a while. But after three months, I suspect that prison life was far too much for her to bear.

I'll bet she sings like a canary now because of her prison depression. And Fitzgerald knows this ... that's why she is testifying right away.

Gave Fitgerald time to put his case in order, so he can tie it up with Miller. But, to have that time, Miller needed to be kept safe.

Just seeing what happens when I crank my tinfoil hat to eleven. ;)
