2. The USCG was all over the place when no one else was there

my first husband was a "coastie" and I was with him all four years. It's amazing what they do, and very dangerous, but little is heard about it. We were stationed in Ketchikan,Alaska for two years and the locals were so appreciative of what they did we got a 10% discount at many of the stores just for showing CG ID.

3. The Coast Guard has been at the forefront of Search and Rescue ...

... for centuries. They swing into action immediately, without sticking a wet finger into the poltical winds to ascertain beneficial opportunities. Notoriously under-funded every year, they spend very little on Public Relations, preferring instead to use personnel for actual operational roles. Long under the Treasury Department (and DOT for a short time), they're amazingly corruption-free. That'll probably change under DHS.
