ON YAHOO: U.S. Insists on Keeping Control of Web

GENEVA - A senior U.S. official rejected calls on Thursday for a U.N. body to take over control of the main computers that direct traffic on the Internet, reiterating U.S. intentions to keep its historical role as the medium's principal overseer.

"We will not agree to the U.N. taking over the management of the Internet," said Ambassador David Gross, the U.S. coordinator for international communications and information policy at the State Department. "Some countries want that. We think that's unacceptable."

Many countries, particularly developing ones, have become increasingly concerned about the U.S. control, which stems from the country's role in creating the Internet as a Pentagon project and funding much of its early development.

Gross was in Geneva for the last preparatory meeting ahead of November's U.N. World Summit on the Information Society in Tunisia.

Some negotiators from other countries said there was a growing sense that a compromise had to be reached and that no single country ought to be the ultimate authority over such a vital part of the global economy

3. This is good but... they need even more balls!

The rest of the world could VERY easily force our hand... its simple... switch their domestic nets to seprate DNS servers and then make a simple ultimadum... we delist EVERY US company from our servers (cutting off those markets 100%) or you agree that both our sets of servers get turned over to an international group.

We would have no choice.

The last thing the internets need is an added layer of bureaucracy. I say leave it as it is. Do we really want, say, China managing the internet?

Sorry, I knew I should've posted a reference to the story about Yahoo giving the identity of a blogger to the Chinese gov't in my post but got lazy. The blogger had posted something the gov't didn't agree with and subsequently received (I think) 10 years in prison. This story came out a week or two ago.

7. The Internet

Is world wide by its nature. Now one government wants to control it.

So it seems broke to me.

The solution seems to be that it will come under the regulations of each country, such as the FCC in the US. Then each country will have agreements with each other country to permit access. This will then expand to groups of countries that agree to common rules.

So if control is not vested with one common authority that, has the agreement of all parties it will be fragmented into groups.

So we will have internets.

As to China, I believe that they are only controlling the internet within China, which I believe is the intent of the EU, which will allow the EU to control the use within its borders and not have the US controlling that use.

8. I think the NSA already pretty much controls the internet

with ECHELON. emails, phone calls, faxes.. I don't think they will let the UN have any say. Well, they don't really control it but they can pretty much monitor anything passing through the net.
