Judy's Lawyer: Testimony was broader than Libby

by dumbya
Fri Sep 30th, 2005 at 13:40:55 PDT

Judy Miller's lawyer, Bob Bennett (Bill Bennett's brother), was on with Wolf and said that Judy's testimony was focused on the entire Valerie Plame matter. This is big, because her testimony wasn't limited to Scooter. It appears that Judy negotiated a deal so she wouldn't have to answer questiosn regarding her bogus pre-war reporting rather than limiting the questions to Scooter alone.

Digby sums it up pretty nicely.

"Ok kidz. Judy's lawyer Bob Bennett just told Wolf Blitzer that Judy's agreement with Fitzgerald was limited to "the Valerie Plame matter" not just Libby. Wolf pressed. Fitzgerald reiterated that it was "the Valerie Plame matter."

Judy was worried that Fitzgerald was going to pursue her bogus WMD claims.

Bolton and Cheney and Rove all the rest aren't off the hook on Plame. Do you suppose that includes Niger? "

1. Sing Judy Sing
Save your own ass because it's apparent that your PNAC buddies aren't going to do much to help you.

Oh yeah, we don't want anyone asking questions about your friend David Kelly? Now do we Judy?

Who is David Kelly?
She had better save herself. Loyalty only runs one way with that group.

6. David Kelly was the UK WMD scientist who 'suicided himself' in 2003

The last email Mr. Kelly sent, just before he died, was to Judith Miller.

8. David Kelly was the bio-weapons expert
who got in trouble for saying that Blair had 'sexed up' the dossier. He was 'suicided' in England soon after. Judith Miller was one of the last people he had contact with before he died.

4. I doubt it was her WMD lies Miller didn't want to testify about...
I think she made a deal with Fitzgerald to restrict her testimony solely to her conversations with Libby alone.

Several news stories have suggested that it was only when Fitzgerald assured her she wouldn't have to testify about anyone EXCEPT Libby (such as GFY Cheney), that Miller accepted Fitzgerald's offer and walked free.

Yes, she probably testified "only" about Plame. But I suspect she testified "only" about what she learned about Plame from Libby himself, alone, in person, hand on his heart, on double super secret background.

15. I haven't seen anyone bring this up yet but
wasn't there another case the Fitzgerald was working on in NY and Judy was supposedly the one who gave a heads up to a mosque being raided or something like that. Some have speculated that once Fitz got her on the stand he could ask her about that case. That is what came to my mind when I first heard that the questioning would be limited to the Plame case.

24. Yes
The money laundering case. There was a "supposed" Islamic charity that was being investigated for money laundering. And two reporters, Miller being one, allegedly gave them a heads up, that the FBI was on the way. In connection with this case, Fitzgerald tried to get her phone records, but it was taken to court and Fitzgerald was denied access to the records he sought. I think she didn't want to be compromised in that case which, I think, is one of the main reasons she didn't want to testify. And given that Libby says she received the waiver a year ago it does cast doubt on her given reason for refusing to testify. What I don't know is, if one is being questioned in a particular case, like Plame, can the grand jury also ask questions pertaining to a different case altogether?

If Judy tesitifeis before a grand jury like she reports the news, then she'll be indicted for perjury.

7. Looks like Bolton's visit to Judy paid off for him
Bolton was responsible for the false yellow cake story (that Judy helped pushed in the media) he pays her a visit in jail and she then negotiates a deal to not talk about it. Interesting indeed.

It's a very small world. I hadn't realized Bob Bennett was Clinton's lawyer.

14. Strange, eh?
I didn't see CNN. But while he did not dwell on it, he did make clear there was the essential agreement with Fitzgerald, where only the conversation(s) with Libby could be discussed. I do not think that it is odd that that would take four hours.

I am not implying that I believe a word out of Bennett's mouth. He could be telling Matthews the truth, or lying. Clearly, when one considers that Matthews was one of the journalists that Rove called, we know that their discussions are scripted and hardly frank.

16. I Think He's Lying
Although, it is quite possible that was all Fitz needed anyway.

I have a feeling Miller was merely icing that smoothed things out. She was probably protecting herself, NOT her source and Fitz threatened her w/ criminal contempt and tempted her with some sort of immunity for her crime(s) for her testimony and so she finally decided to give it up.

18. Sounds very likely.
He might not need to ask her as much before a grand jury as he will when the cases go to court.

17. I, like Arianna, think Judy herself was one source of the leak on Plame.
I think she helped peddle the story to other reporters. They were smart, however, and did not print the info.

Then Rove got involved because the WH got desperate. Novak was the only sucker who would print the disclosure.

Obviously not one of the brighter peoples' idea, but maybe. Brother helping brother...rather too coincidental for my taste.

Edited for typorama, as usual.

26. Or, smokescreen against source(S) being plural.
Did she testify about her MULTIPLE sources? Or, does this carefully worded revelation keep us from discussing that obvious inconsistancy.

"Broader than Libby" can mean just about anything.
