23. Mindless, clapping seals
Most Americans don't believe in immigration. Most Americans are immigrants. Therefore, we should send them back where they came from. They might even learn to think for themselves.

2. Keep this in mind
Take any single conservative view. You may agree with point and yet be liberal (overall). But if you disagree with even one point, you're not conservative. Conservativism does not allow dissention. Let may try it this way: if you're a little liberal, you're liberal. If you're a little conservative, you're liberal. Get it?

Gallup says "Most Americans don't believe the Patriot Act violates civil rights." www.gallup.com/poll/releases/pr031001.asp Does Gallup have a RW bias by choosing what to report??

6. ....
People aren't informed. Anyone who thinks the media is liberal is fucking stupid, period. The poll showing viewers' knowledge of current events have "liberal" channels like NPR coming in first. Shows what the fair and balanced schtick will get you.

7. Sure. Whatever Gallups Says....
Leave it to Gallup to find self-described "Liberals" who think the media is too liberal. According to Gallup, 18% of Liberals think the media is too liberal. Yeah, right.

8. Of ocurse they do. Goebbels v2.0 is VERY effective
I guarantee you that, 30 years from now when Corporate TV Pravda look MUCH more like the Original Pravda (but equally and Orwellian-ly slanted for Busheviks and Neocons and Dittoheads and Brownshirts) there will STILL be a phat majority who believe the BIG LIE of the "liberal media".

Why? Because the TV told them to believe that.

Hitler and Goebbels were absolutely right about the big lie. It still holds true today and it is a prime reason for Bushevik success.

10. I Agree (sort of)

The news media is liberal. By and large the media will report both sides of most issues.

Most Americans felt (and still feel) the media should support the country in a time of war. When the media showed our bad side in the Vietnam War, this outraged most Americans. This is what they meant by the media being "too liberal".

Since then the message has simply been obfuscated. So remind people when they complain about the media being too liberal that what they are saying is "the media is giving both sides of the issues" and ask them why (outside of reporting on US military actions) they consider this a "bad" thing.

During the American-Iraqi War, of course, the US media was anything but liberal. You might want to remind them of that as well and ask them if they want the media controlled by big government even in peacetime.

19. No
Reporters tend to be centrists, not liberals. And the people who own and manage the networks are anything but liberal.

There's a bit of a mythology about the behavior of the media during Vietnam. The extent to which they portrayed the "bad" of the war is exagerrated, and has more to do with "if it bleeds, it leads" than any political bias. There are handful of books on the topic.

In any case, the big difference between then and now is that there are far fewer companies and independent media outlets than there were then.

13. Not the brightest bulbs...
The American public also watches "reality TV" and thinks that wrestling is real. Most of your "average Joe" types just want to roll along without thinking or being disturbed.

There is a great short story, "Harrison Bergeron" in Vonnegut's Welcome to the Monkey House that keeps nagging at me. The metal bands put on peoples heads to numb and dumb them down. I feel that a pretty large chunk of the American public doen't want to think about how screwed up things are. To lazy or scared to fight, they sit in front of their televisions and believe anything that makes them feel "safer".

After working hard all day at a job they probably don't like and that doesn't pay nearly enough for the abuse they have to take; all they want to do is go home and vegetate. Agitation requires energy that a whole lot of people just don't have any more.

Just my dos pesos!

15. The Right view the media as tools to further their aims.
The Left view them as tools to disseminate information. The media do a good job of the latter, but as far as the right wing is concerned, a terrible job of the former -- and so are 'too liberal.'

16. Your implication and many of the posters here seem to miss the point.

This is the sub-header

Forty-five percent of Americans say yes

From the tone in this thread I think the results of this poll are being misread and incredibly so.

The numbers plainly show a decrease in the % of those that believe the media is "too liberal" and in _ all _ catagories.

17. People seem to think
that certain FACTS are debatable.
Thats why we have frickin polls on whether Iraq was involved in 9/11 or whether Iraq has WMD's. Look... they either do or they don't... and some people just can't handle that.
They also seem to talking about hypocracy (on one side only ) is an important part of "balance"
It's very sad.

20. Most Americans don't even know what liberal
is. If you ask them what print media is liberal they say Time or Newspeak. They don't even know that In These Times, Mother Jones, The Nation exist.

The corporate controlled press has been very successful in dumbing down a large % of the population by eliminating the Left/Liberal take on things.

22. being unbiased is considered liberal by many
a guy here at work buys the liberal media thing. He believes anything that may slightly shed poor lite on the current admin is liberal.

Being unbiased does not make you liberal. He cannot get that through his head. I believe most people see it that way.
