Ah-nold's victory proves ONE thing.
Voters, particularly the vapid California voters treat elections like High School popularity contests, with the qualifier that they do not want their taxes raised. They are so fickle on most other issues that it doesn't pay to campaign on issues.

Obviously what we need is 'cool' candidates without substance (or at least substance that's hidden by a lot of glamor) to win, especially in silicone-land.

(I'm a former San Diegan, so I'm not responding to any whining about California's well-earned airhead image)

2. I don't know what to think about it.
Davis and Bustamante are both members of the DLC. Arnold has caused concern because he is a social liberal. It may have been a choice between Democrats who act like republicans or a republican who acts like a Democrat. We will see.

5. Arnold would have won if he belonged to the communist party
It didnt matter what party he was from, they wanted change and Arnie had the recognition. He would have won as a R a D or an I.

Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 08:35 AM by bowens43
national and regional are decided on greed and popularity. We live in a nation comprised primarily of selfish , materialistic , shallow people. Just watch commercial TV for a few hours and you will see that it is true. Maybe , as a nation , we get the government we deserve.

11. Umm... I didn't say I was surprised.
Of course, I was hoping that I would be surprised, that Californians would reject the recall. It has happened before.

We need our guys to be phonier and slimier, like theirs!

I've watched Reagan beat Mondale with "There you go again", Bush beat Dukakis with Willie Horton and Dukakis in a helmet, Clinton win ONLY by the grace of Ross Perot, and the stupidest presidential candidate EVER "beat" the boring but qualified Gore.

Believe me, I am ANYTHING but naive.

4. I disagree...
You can be all style, no substance if you're a REPUBLICAN.

All during the buildup to the war we heard about how
'Hollyweird Types' should just SHUT UP because they are
just actors and can't possibly know anything about politics.

If Martin Sheen ran against Ahnuld, he'd've been pilloried for
being 'objectively pro-terrorism' and besides "He's never held
public office!!!!"

Hell, look at Clark; there are actually serious news stories about
how he was a big fat p*ssy in Bosnia and "didn't do much" (besides
take 2 bullets) in Vietnam. Meanwhile President AWOL gets called
a 'war hero'.

I definitely agree with everything else you've said tho'...

13. Come on. Now it can be said. Davis was a loser from the start.
I kept thinking of that Mr. Atlas ad in old superhero comic books, where the muscle man kicks sand in the face of the pasty weakling cowering on the beach. Except Davis never sent in the coupon to take the body building course. How someone as socially awkward as Davis got to be Governor is still a mystery. He made Nixon look gregarious. If this is the best the California Democrats could come up with ...
