Can anyone image if Pres. Clinton had nominated his personal attorney?!
For a seat on the Supreme Court of the United States?

One who has no experience as a judge? (I know it's not required, but still . . . )

The right wingers would've gone apoplectic!

CNN would've been jumping up and down on Clinton too--believe it.

I simply can't believe the passes that Bush gets from the House & Senate Dems and the media.

1. a point of distinction, miers is white house counsel, not personal lawyer
she serves the office of the president. there are some key differences in terms of which side of cases she can advise on and also as relates to attorney-client privilege.

in particular, attorney-clients confidentiality is much stronger for bush's personal lawyer than it is for white house counsel.

5. She used to be his personal lawyer when he was Governor of Texas.
She was promoted to WHite House counsel when * was selected by SCOTUS.

9. She wasn't White House counsel until the second term
In the first four years of the Viertes Reich, Alberto "Tortureboy" Gonzalez was White House Counsel and Miers was something like assistant chief of staff for finance and parties. Something midlevel.

Then came the second four years. Ashcroft got a record deal and a world tour, TBG got Ashcroft's slot and Miers took TBG's slot.

2. Believe it.
The mass media are simply the propaganda arm of the war profiteering corporations. The corporate cabal has all the money and owns the airwaves. The mass media will protect Bush and the cabal to the end. Do not expect them to change. They tell the truth sometimes to maintain a veneer of credibility. My advice is to turn off the corporate media.

3. He got Ginsburg in via the same method
He asked Orrin Hatch who they (GOP) would let in and she was one of the names.

Everybody take a stress pill and unlax that sphincter a bit.

6. She should be rejected before the hearing stage
It's a really offensive nomination. I feel like, after all the media coverage of Brownie and "how many other Brownies are there" (unqualified cronies), this is the worst kind of insult. The Supreme Court is not a patronage job! For Chrissake, where is the freaking outrage?!

Why is Schumer saying "This is a good first day". Isn't any senator saying "Oh, no ya don't!"???

Where is my party?

7. of course the SCOTUS is a patronage job
All appointments made by the President are patronage jobs. And its hardly the first or last time that a close advisor/friend of the president is going to get a Supreme Court appointment.

If Lloyd Cutler ... one of the most highly regarded lawyers in the land, and Clinton's WH Counsel, had been named to the Supremes, no one would've batted an eye.

Now, if he had named Beth Nolan, who later was WH Counsel, you're right, there would be screaming. She only graduated from law school in 1980, I think, and was probably no more than 40 in Clinton's fifth term. Not really comparable to someone who is 58 and has served in more positions.

Cutler: more distinguished than Miers
Miers: more distinguished than Nolan
What does it prove? Nothing.

8. Well, the right wingers do seem to be going apoplectic
Andrew Sullivan has a run-down of the initial reactions from the usual suspects. And Free Republic is completely up in arms.

No one seems happy with this pick.

10. Thus we will hear "Since nobody likes her, she must be a good compromise"
...and in she will go. I hope Reid has a plan here, other than simple confirmation. Perhaps he knows something about this woman, and is 'selecting his enemy'.

His endorsement surprised me.

This has done more to piss them off than anything else he's done.
