I seem to remember back from the Clinton administration Janet Reno issuing statements and giving press conferences explaining her actions regarding the Clinton investigations.
And I remember the media seemed as relentless as the Republicans in pressuring her to appoint special counsels.
It seems very different nowadays. There are some editorials calling for Ashcroft to appoint independent investigators, but mostly it's just "objectively" reporting the Democrats' comments, amongst the usual discussions about why they hate Bush so much.
And Ashcroft himself, I only know of one time he commented on it. He was giving a press conference on another matter. When someone asked about the leak, he read a prepared statement, and when someone asked another, he just sneered, then literally turned his back on the press and walked out.
How does he get away with it?
