White House is "investigating" itself
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 12:47 PM by Woodstock
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2003/10/08/executive_privilege_seen_as_leak_case_option/

"As the 5 p.m. deadline passed, staff members scrambled to turn over relevant documents to White House Counsel Alberto R. Gonzales, who is the White House's liaison to the Justice Department during the investigation. Justice Department officials have given the White House specific deadlines to produce documents related to the investigation, though they would not make the dates public. McClellan said the deadlines are in the next couple of weeks.

McClellan said Gonzales's office set its own deadline for 5 p.m. yesterday so that it could go through the piles of information to see what information is relevant and should be turned over.

Gonzales's office will also have the opportunity to examine what information, if any, should not be turned over because the administration believes it is protected by executive privilege. The Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel, which provides legal opinions on questions with constitutional dimensions, would review any White House claims."

So they are essentially investigating themselves.

1. The Good outweighs the Bad
Yeah, okay, so this means the investigation will be more difficult and longer. There's an upside though -- a big one re-enforced by history. The Bush administration is in the process of fashioning a cover-up which will only compound the problem. Let them dig their hole even deeper, it's to our advantage.

2. But it could also just end, right?

Bush doesn't give them anything (and they destroy the rest.) Ashcroft's stooge says the investigation is over.

The Republican Congress stonewalls anything further.

The End.

Cycle repeats.

We creep closer and closer to fascism.

3. I think you've just called it...
...because the normal checks and balances of government have been eliminated...and the opposition has been neutralized. The Bushies will skate once again.

7. What can we do?
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 04:06 PM by Woodstock
There has to be something. The sheeple got riled up about the FCC. There must be SOME way to make them care about this. Right now they think everything is going their way, so they don't care. But how can we get them to see that it won't always be this way? Things are so much more unstable in our country and the world now that Bush and the neocons have been in power, that bigger, badder storm clouds are now on the horizon, and the sheeple can't dodge them forever. And when they strike, the sheeple will have given up all recourse, because they will have given up their rights and their government. Once freedom is gone, it's gone.

Is there a Woodward-Bernstein team out there wanting to make their mark and keep this alive? Back then it was Ben Bradlee/Katie Graham, and they were far from in bed with big business and the Nixon Administration. Now big business literally owns the media, and they know Bush is the side their bread is buttered on.

Or will the Democrats keep talking about it? Even once it is dead? Never let them forget? There has to be some way to fight back.

5. On 4A of my paper today under "At a Glance" WH says:
(Under headline: Bush expresses doubt about success of probe.)

"The spokesman (McClellan) would not rule out the possibility that the WH would invoke executive privilege to shield sensitive documents from the Justice Department's inquiry."

Sick fucks.

6. This is how the investigations will go
Bush: Hey Rummy, did you do it?
Rummy: Nope.
Bush: How about you, Rove.
Rove: Wasn't me.
Bush: Well, Chenny, was it you?
Chenny: Not me boss.
Bush; Well Ok. That settles it.

Bush, speaking to the press: After intensive investigations we have determined that the leak did not originate in the White House. Now let's put this behind us and move on.
