O'Rielley hangs up on Fresh Air interview
catch it if you can. Hysterical. Terry Gross was just asking him questions. Apparently someone gave his last book an unfavorable review in People magazine. The reviewer then watched The Factor to hear O'Rielly trashing him, the reviewer, on the air. O'Rielley said: "the review of my book was a review of me, not the book. Review the book, not me. This guy (who did the review) is a pin head." (HA HA) So the People reviewer does a followup piece in People that quoted O'Rielly from the show then said: "Consistency is not Bill's long suit"

Well, Terry Gross wanted to read that snip and O'Rielly went nuts, yelled at her about how she was nicer to Franken and hung up. He didn't want her to review it and is still crying about Franken.

Hysterical. What a cry baby!

Terry starts off the clip with a clip from O'Reilly's show whining about the interview, then plays the interview.

Listening now, it sounds good. O'Reilly is sounding kind of hostile from the start. :-)

I don't have a chance to listen to the radio while I'm at work, and I sorely miss Fresh Air. Bookmarked!

On topic: What a horse's ass! He digs a hole for himself everytime he's allowed to open his fat mouth outside of the safety of his own show. I just can't get enough of listening to O'Reilly get his ass handed to him. heh.

5. i listened to it. he is such a pompous ass
He talks like he is a know it all. He has that Cheney thing going on as well...talks with authority, like he's talking to little children. Every time he got the chance he would throw in that his book is #1 on the NY times best seller list, how he is so famous and has the most influential news show on cable. It's all me, me, me, and me...

I thought the interview went pretty well, untill Bill worked himself up into a frenzy giving a long speech about how everyone is out to get him then walked out. What a putz. He is such a coward.

I mean, I understand that one needs to speak slowly (and in monosyllables) to FAUX listeners, but this was on NPR... ;)

Ok, he *is* a shill- but he's an egomaniac and a bully first.

It's like he's discovered that sucking GOP dick gives him the chance to shout at people on the air, call them stupid, and brag about how great he is. But when shilling for Republicans gets in the way of praising himself, he always opts for self-praise.

He's really a sad little man to me, somehow. Most of those guys just seem like media whores or, at worst, idiots. But O'Reilley really seems like someone that just hates the world.

Interviewing equal numbers of conservative and liberals on their fluff shows. I guess it's hard to maintain equal time when your guest starts crying and hangs up.

Now if NPR would only try a little harder to get balance in their newsroom, or maybe hire an investigative reporter who does something beyond reading the same news everyone else has.

He seems to believe that he is the toughest canon in talk show land, but he crumbles at the first sign of resistance.

He was already complaining on his show that a "certain" newspaper, deliberately hired somebody who didn't like him to research and criticize his book.

Coming from somebody who is not particularly affectionate towards many writers and makes a living off criticizing people, it is just so...so....FUNNY!

26. I listened to the audio
and I have to say that I really don't like listening to Terry Gross give these types of interviews. She is far too polite and civil and that is not what works with these people. She lets them drone on and on which they are very happy to do. The Gene Simmons interview is another perfect example. Fresh Air could use Al Franken or Jon Stewart or someone like them to conduct interviews with people like O'Reilly. Gross sounded clearly flustered on numerous occasions and doesn't seem to know how to reinsert herself into the interview when her guest is rambling on.

27. I can't tell you how much I disagree with you
with both Simmons and O'Reilly she handled it perfectly.

Totally kept her cool, which drove them into rages you don't hear a lot on NPR. With Simmons, at one point she just said matter-of-factly, something like "that was really obnoxious" at some idiotic sexist comment he made.

Now with O'Reilly, he's ranting himself into a lather, and she just chuckles a little. :-)

I still think that she lets the interviews get away from her. If I'd tuned in during the middle of that interview I might have wondered who was conducting it. I heard O'Reilly's voice far more than hers and I really got tired of it. I really think that Franken or Stewart or Moore would be better suited.

Gross is not good or quick with comebacks. When O'Reilly demanded an answer from her about something there were long pauses and stuttering. Not impressive.

32. she exposed him
the truth about O'Reilly is that he lies, that his ideas are pretty stupid, that he bullies people, that he's obsessed with Al Franken, and that he's a coward. Gross got O'Reilly to demonstrate all these things in a pretty short interview.

I like those other people you mention, but I don't see them as being the same thing. Gross isn't a voice of the left, and she isn't a comedian or any kind of entertainer.

Frankly, I think we do need a voice of the left to do interviews with people like him. They don't have to be entertaining or funny just more assertive than Gross is. I honestly don't think that that interview hurt him among the people who are his fans--if they bothered to listen.

I don't know why you're hung up on that. That's not what she is or what she's supposed to be, or ever has been. She's risen to the top of radio interviewers for doing what she does, it doesn't make much sense to hold it against her that she's not this "voice of the left" that you want. It's just not what she is.

...after YOU used that phrase and that somehow means that I'm "hung up on that"??? Let me make something clear because I can sense a certain amount of testiness creeping into this thread now: I like Terry Gross--ALOT. I just personally don't like it when I hear her doing interviews with really obnoxious people. NOT because I think she's some shrinking violet but because I'd really like to hear those obnoxious people take it on the chin. Terry Gross is alot of things but she's not particularly aggressive. That's not an indictment of her as a person or as an interviewer. A more aggressive interviewer is simply to my taste. And by aggressive I don't mean someone who will turn the show into Jerry Springer or WWF. Once again, how about Rhandi Rhodes?

35. She allows everyone time to answer...refreshing to hear nowadays.
You seem to have a problem with her because she is a woman "who can't handle it" or something. Why do you think Franken could do a better interview? I love him, but frankly Franken himself can be very slow in an interview and stutters occasionally. You only chose men in your analysis of who would be a better interviewer. Gross has had her show interviewing people for decades and you think Michael Moore would be better? Have you even heard him interview anyone other than Heston in his movie? What are his qualifications to do that? As far as John Stewart...he is a comedian. Love him too, but "quick comebacks" are for laughs...not real journalism. Gross gave O'Reilly the mic to make an ass of himself and he did.

The screaming heads on TV have lowered the bar in journalism where it is perfectly acceptable for people to shout over one another so nobody understands anything said by either party. Terry Gross does not do that. Maybe you would like the WWF style on NPR but not me.

Let's not jump to provocative conclusions like that. And maybe the people I cited are not the best examples. I don't mean that Franken or Stewart or whoever should replace Gross on her own show. I said that I would prefer to hear them conduct these types of interviews--not necessarily on Fresh Air. You seem determined to draw the conclusion that I have some problem with Terry Gross as a female interviewer. You are wrong. I named the people I did because their names popped into my head-- and I like them.

And I'm not "attacking" Gross. That is a very O'Reilly-ish thing to say.

No slam at Terry, either, I really like her shows. But O'Reilly is a political predator....

Not saying that O'Reilly was his usual full-of-shit self because he was. In fact, I think he wanted to make it confrontational....he was clearly on attack mode. I think he took over the interview and, frankly, I think she was a tad intimidated by his style. She's pretty laid back. I think she was using other people's quotes rather than taking Bill on directly.

Bill got his talking points accross: I'm popular, because I tell the truth, I never spin, but those that catch me spinning are leftie propagandists. I heard that 10 times, I think.

Funniest point was him being stunned to find out he wasn't an Independent, but a registered Republican. Stunned that someone would check his voter registration card, I think is more like it.

whenever asked a question that is not scripted. He just pauses, er's & ah's, and bullies hi way through. He NEVER answers a question tossed in his direction. This is one of the reasons he is so scared of Al Franken. He can't get past the impasse verbally, so he goes into fits of rage. It is the way he learned to deal with things he has no concept of.

70. She's not always as smooth as I'd like.
But she's excellent at creating a relaxed environment and allowing her guest (the interviewee) enough time to ramble on and hopefully reveal some bits that aren't in the stock script. Even when the O'Reilly interview started to wander a bit, I enjoyed the fact that she (almost) got him to calm down from his initial defensiveness and talk about his family, his father, etc.

It's very humanising, and I think it stands in wonderful contrast to the style of 'journalism' practiced by the man she was interviewing. Of course, I'd still love to put O'Reilly in the hotseat and force him to answer questions from Carville or Franken, but that's just not in the FAUX script.

33. Terry Gross. Hang Up On Terry Gross?
... You've just got to be kidding, Bill.

Terry is by far one of the class acts of the media zoo. She is thorough, informed, and erudite - while at the same time being probably one of the sweetest and most non-offensive people in the profession today.

Her backgroud and experience is the mountain to O'Reilly's mole hill. As a journalist, Bill O'Reilly could not even but hope to lick the mud off her boots.

Damn. What an ass. You're one hell of a very low person, in general, much less professionally, when you hang up on Terry Gross.

Can he crawl much further into the gutter after this? Inquiring minds want to know, Bill.

(Actual text of email sent by me to O'Rielly@foxnews.com)

Grow up, you big pussy.

Terri's interview gave you the opportunity to address consistent and appropriate criticisms leveled at you, and to defend yourself in front of some of your harshest critics, and you pussied out. I guess we know what a bully you really are when a 5' something meek as a mouse radio talk show host can cause you to throw a temper tantrum on the scale of an ADHD 5 year old, just by asking you to defend your abysmal record on the truth.

By the way, you mispoke about the Peabody being a Polk, and that is on the record. Deal with it. Moron!

71. What weaseling!
If I was hearing O'Reilly correctly, he basically claimed that Gross was an accessory to libel by allowing Franken's claims to go unquestioned, right? And then he went on to refute Franken's statement that O'Reilly had claimed to win a Peabody.

But his only defenses for this line of reasoning are that 1) he 'misspoke' rather than lied (*snort*), and 2) he has since corrected his earlier 'error' on his show. Er...how does this invalidate Franken's statement? How does it make it fallacious?

PS: I don't watch 'The Factor', so I'm not part of the 'in-crowd' to whom O'Reilly is preaching. But does he really use the word 'fallacious' that often when speaking to a FAUX audience?

80. I'll give you 3-to-1 odds
...that he starts up some sort of campaign to take public funding of any sort away from NPR. 'After all', the story will go, 'why should our tax money go to a partisan political organisation?'

Think back to the anti-NEA/PBS funding rants of the Reagan Era Republicans, combine that with O'Reilly's psychological problems (paranoid schizo, delusions of self-importance, etc.), mix it up with the fact that he's now been the 'target' of NPR, and I think the odds are pretty good that he'll organise a boycott at least.

but knew that he would be calling for boycotts and defunding of NPR. He and his ilk have been trying to kill that voice for well over a decade and they have certainly tamed it. Pitiful.

NPR is still the best overall show in town, but only because there is nothing that stateside with that scope of coverage. Some shows are great, some suck and are so middle of the road they wind up offering nothing.

Gross is fantastic. Her interviews of musicians are wonderful. I did hear her Simmons interview. He was pig, she handled him well, letting him hang himself, but then didn't back down, told him what a pathetic human he was. That interview will be taught in jounarlism school for years to come.

Of course, he wants the truth to be what he says it is...much easy if there is no one out there to challenge is worldview.

It is incredibly bad form and entirely unprofessional for Bill O'Reilly to have hung-up on her. From a media relations standpoint, it speaks volumes about his unreliablity and instability as a guest.

He's a decent demagogue, so one can almost believe his 'I'm fighting for the common man' routine. Until, that is, someone mentions Al Franken. Then he's ranting about how the entire system is out to get him, and how anyone who dares defend Franken's right (under the 1st Ammendment) to write satire must be intellectually dishonest, a paid DLC shill, sleeping with Franken's sister, or all of the above.

He's definitely a skilled marketer, though. Did you hear how many times he said the title of his new book? He gets a Murdoch biscuit for that.

56. Just finished listening to the interview and he sounds unbalanced
And I have to say that O'Reilly really came off as unbalanced. He just kept repeating versions of the same line: "I tell you the truth, and I told you the truth, and if you don't like the truth then you're defaming me."

I've got to say, in seven years this guy has apparently only learned to sew the argument tight around that basic core idea.

1. This is the truth (spins some lie, calls someone a name, etc.)

2. Reaffirms for his listeners that what he just told them was the "truth."

3. Insults anyone who would disagree, and then dares you to be insulted.

Same thing, over and over.

But when he tried that with Terry Gross, who was, after all, conducting an interview, consisting of asking questions, one of which might at any time include, "Why do you believe that?", his system failed, and at that point he reminded me of the robot on "Lost in Space" that would start going all weird about "Danger, Danger" and then he just lost it and hung up.

Terry summed it up exactly right, just after he hung up, too.

She said something like, "so you've just got to give a speech and get the last word and then hang up" or something, and that's EXACTLY what he was doing.

I guess there are just a lot of people who think it's too tedious or boring to think for themselves who feel like it's worthwhile to be lectured by a pompous loudmouth like this guy, and who buy his bullshit.

Too bad. This guy is deluded.

when Bill asked her if she was just as hard on Al Franken:

"Um...he's a humorist. You're a journalist. I hold journalists to a higher standard."

Or maybe:

"I couldn't find a lot of controversial reviews about him. People generally agree that he's just funny."

64. Now that was amusing stuff.
My favourite part of that interview--other than the standard O'Reilly paranoid delusions that 'THEY' are out to 'get' him via defamation--is when Mr. Bill shows precisely how dualistic his worldview and mindset really is. After browbeating Terry into admitting that she was less 'hard' on Franken during their interview of his humourous book, he immediately turns this qualitative scale into pure absolutes: Franken was given a 'free pass' while O'Reilly gets 'set up' and 'attacked', etc.

I'm constantly amazed by the fact that conservatives so often see the world in such a simplistic way. If it's not White, then by god it must be Black! Grey-scale spectrums and relative scales are for traitors, commies, and pinkos, right?

*sigh*

67. His weakness is his temper
If Terry interviewed Rush or Hannity with these type of questions, I believe that they would never have left in a huff. Those loney tunes would have siezed the opportunity to pound their political/social message into Terry.

But B.O.can't control his anger, which would afford him the control of any interview. Terry asked him open ended questions. It was not until the end of the interview did she ask any follow ups of a debating nature. But B.O was tense from the start. He was like a coiled spring.

Heck, I know what these guys are like! I'm a native NYer, myself. Guys like B.O. are itching for a fight - even if he doesn't realize it. He's made a recent career making most issues come back to him and his being right about them. So, for him and his personality not to be the central topic of an interview is ludicrous.

He'll be dangerous if he gets a clue.

the sad thing is that he certainly has worked hard and 'gone places' he just doesn't know, yet, that that is just part of life and most are striving for the same thing in the sense that 'every road leads to rome'... he should have enjoyed his success but now it is only going to destroy him.

If he was in college, then he was old enough to join up. Hrmph. He likes to say how aggressive he was. The army would have offered him an outlet. Guess he wasn't *that tough.

I went to Catholic elementary and high schools, too. So, between his dad and the Sisters, he couldn't handle the discipline. Well, that's no fault of the rest of us, including Franken and Gross. Bill needs to stop visualizing everyone wearing nuns habits.

....he was an unpatriotic draft-dodger? This GOP double standard makes me SO ill. Just like Clinton is a rapist but Ah-nold is just a playful guy.

85. I just listened to the whole thing on the website.
It is an absolute classic. Oh'Really unmasked for the moronic idiot he is by just letting him ramble, rant, go off the deepend, accuse everyone else of what he does, and generally act like a silly, spoiled, paranoid man of extremely limited intellect.

I'm in love with Terri. She deftly let him hang himself.

I just had to hear this again.

So O'Reilly rants about the nasty, mean-spirited interviewer from NPR who put him on the spot by asking a few pointed questions.

Give him 10 minutes and he'll be cutting someone's mic, telling them to shut-up, and shouting that they're views are irrelevant because they're just a wacko.

He's an amazing example of the worst aspects of humanity; pride, aggression, intolerance, hypocrisy, and greed. Bill might serve some purpose at least, by helping us recognize those parts of ourselves and never let them take charge.

142. Does anyone know how to get O'Reilly Factor transcripts?
Getting Factor transcripts: Is it a pay through the nose thing? Do I have to buy them through Fox News or something (I wouldn't want to support them financially if it wasn't absolutely necessary). Is there any service that colelcts them that doesn't charge? Any information would be greatly appreciated! I'm looking for a transcript of yesterday's show where he talks about Terry Gross, so I can show what an ass and a liar he really is. Thanks!
