How do the jobs of the Gov and Lt. Gov relate in California?

How much are Arnold and Bustamante going to have to work together? Or does Arnold get to appoint a new one? Those'll be some awkward meetings....

1. Davis was Lt. Gov during Pete Wilsons term

The post is similar to the VP. It's a tie breaking vote in the state legislature. It's a post that has clout in tha the Lt. Gov can pursue such things as gross polluters ( Bustamante went after an offshore oil platformn that was particularly egregious ) but any activity like thisis usually done with the Gov. OK.

I wonder how sson we will see a settlement of the Enron case.

2. LT Governor separately elected

and has full power to act as Governor whenever the Governor is out of the state. At least that's the way it was a few years ago. We have had several situations where the two offices have been held by different parties- Brown and Curb, Deukmejian and Dymally, etc. - and this has occasionally led to some minor brouhaha.
